Me too! I go from being extremely happy to extremely sad in an instant. I'm not a mood swing kinda girl normally. I have given up everything that isn't macro except coffee and sugarless gum. Still workin on those 2. Oh and pomegranate juice too. My skin is a mess and I can't fall asleep and then I can't wake up. I'm starting to really enjoy the clean, yummy food, sea vegetables and all, and I'm never hungry but I'm so constipated. This is a lot more food than I'm used to eating and I'm bloated all the time too. I have been vegan for two years and vegetarian for many years before that. None of this food is new to me except the sea vegetables and some of the more exotic vegetables (daikon, burdock etc.) And I never used mirin or rice syrup before either. I don't eat much soy so that's not it. Only tofu 2 x's in the past 2 weeks and in one cup of coffee a day I use soy creamer. Oh wait- and the plums, they are new! Which I love. I haven't made the pickles yet and I'm picking up cheesecloth today so I can make the radishes in the book. I'm hoping that will help with the digestion. I'm eatting about 1 cup of rice 1/2 cup of beans and 1 1/2 cups of cooked vegetables with sea vegetables at dinner and lunch. Leftover grain porridge for breakfast with an umeboshi plum, walnuts, rice syrup and ground flax seeds and 1 cup of miso soup as a snack per day. I use 1/2 cup of rice/barley mixture for the porridge. I am soaking and cooking my grain and beans with kombu to cut down on the gassiness and still my stomach is sooo bloated. I am not trying to lose any weight. I am doing this diet because I want to feel healthier and have more energy. I wasn't eating enough before. Could that be why I am feeling so awful? Are my portions too big or out of whack? Should I eat less of something and more of something else? Worst case scenario- how long does detox take? I feel awful and I really don't want to make the holiday party rounds lookin' a hot mess as I do!

Hi,
Over Thanksgiving I woke up with a sore throat and aches but no fever. I felt okay later but then the coughing started with the phlegm and another sore throat a couple days later. I have been very mucousy in the mornings and having very disturbing dreams. They are just plain WEIRD! I wonder if it's all these thoughts I had stifled below the gunk. Who knows but it has to be detox. I haven't had even a cold in a couple years and it's flu-like symptoms but no flu. It seems to be getting better after a week and a half. Anyways, about this time I also seemed to drop about 4 pounds in one week. It's been a month in with more superhero meals, and this is the first weight loss I've experienced. I've also given up most alcohol and I'm pretty sure that is having a dramatic impact as well. I really hope I stabilize in the next couple weeks - I feel so out of whack!

"flirting" with the superhero diet...

i've been vegan for 2 years.

a week in, i got flu-like symptoms and no flu. it disappeared after two days. also feeling tired and moody. headaches on and off. and having some "interesting" issues in the bathroom that i didn't have before. let's just say.. constipation is not my problem at the moment.

i ate a lot of great, raw food while just vegan.. a lot of salads, a lot of whole grains. but i also ate my share of sweets and sugar, frozen microwave dinners (amy's and stuff like that), and processed veggie burgers. also drink a lot of caffeine and alcohol.

i've now cut out the ready-made frozen dinners completely, no caffeine, and almost no alcohol (had some wine here and there). i'm about 80% superhero right now.
.........could it truly be.. that i am detoxing from THAT?

i guess so?? i don't know. but i can't figure out what else it'd be.

Everybody responds to detox differently. It's very benefical to get massages during this time and plenty of rest.Your body is going through a battle and you will soon emerge the warrior that you are.If you can handle firm pressure then try a deep tissue massage. This helps to release alot of nasty toxins in your body. Drink plenty of water afterwards so the toxins get flushed out.

Wow e.greenleaf that's exactly what I had! It was just as I was starting to be more superhero. I also had the headaches. I've cut out the alcohol, but I don't want to get rid of caffeine until I'm through with school this week (all my final projects are due this week). How are you feeling without the caffeine?

i'm OK without it.

i had 2 days where i was absolutely exhausted. i drank a lot of water and napped on and off when i could (luckily it was the weekend for me). doing a hot body scrub and/or taking a brisk walk in the cold woke me up enough to do some school work. (i'm in law school.. ugh)

this semester i lucked out though and i have all afternoon classes. next semester i'm back to the 9am thing, so i don't know how i'll be functioning then... usually i need some stimulation to stay awake during the boring 9ams. i'm either going to have to start sleeping at 10pm, or resort to yerba mate or something.

btw, have you tried yerba mate tea? it has caffeine, but it's a lot gentler. it doesn't give you the bad crash when it wears off.

I feel like I am dying! (Ok that's an exaggeration.) I hardly ever get sick really, so when I do (like right now,) I feel like I am decomposing. I'd like to know if what I'm experiencing is more detox or if I'm genuinely sick. I am in agony in the ears/nose/throat area, especially the ears and nose. I have sinus pressure, and a runny nose, particularly out of my left nostril. I'm achy all over but no fever. My ears hurt and itch really bad. I have painful post-nasal drip, and I've gone through an entire box of tissues blowing my nose over the last 24 hours. Additionally, I've still got really itchy/irritated armpits, which I mentioned in another thread. I've been drinking decaf chamomile tea with mint and plenty of water. Nothing's helping! Should I take medicine? I'm heading out of town on a weekend getaway with my boyfriend tomorrow, and I'll be sad if my whole trip's ruined by my yucky feelings. Can anyone help a sister out with some advice?? Thank you!! smiley-smile.gif

I've been extremely phlegmy lately, which I have heard from a lot people on this site that they are experiencing this too as a detox symptom. The weird part about me being phlegmy though is that I really was not a big dairy person to being with. I've been vegan/superhero for a little over a month. But practically my whole life I have never been a milk drinker (always soy or rice - but not even those much), always extremely disliked eggs too. Though I was on and off with yogurt at times in my life. So the thing that I mostly gave up was meat. I have to say I think I ate pretty healthy practially my whole life, though definitely not on the same level as superhero. Should phlegm still be a normal detox symptom for me given those circumstances? I feel Wonderful otherwise, but this is annoying because it tastes weird too. Thanks guys - you are all fabulous.

I can sympathize. My husband and I are in our 5th day of the superhero diet and last night I threw up for a good while (my throat is sore this morning) and had diarrhea for 2 hours. I feel weak this morning but better. Eric has a headache and his stomach just feels bloated. We've followed the menu plan in the book. We haven't had caffeine in 10 years and did eat cheese before. We rarely eat meat, so maybe it's just the detox. I hope those symptoms are done. I couldn't stand it last night and took pepto bismol after a warm bath and a heating pad. That settled it for the night.
