I would like to make the lotus root tea because I have a terrible cough. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I cannot find fresh lotus root anywhere. I bought dried lotus root and soaked and boiled it in water, then drank the liquid and ate the root. The recipe calls for fresh lotus root juice though, so I am wondering if the benefits are not the same. I did call whole foods market and they said they would try to order it fresh for me, but I haven't heard back so PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE TO FIND FRESH LOTUS ROOT IN NYC, LET ME KNOW! Thank you! K
maybe try a japanese store cz i think i saw it once in a produce section...
Hi Kellyann,
While you are waiting for lotus root, try this:
Get some organic ginger root, chop it and heat it in water on the stove. Wait for the liquid to turn into a brown color. Try not to use a microwave to heat the ginger in water because it takes time for the ginger juices to get extracted into the water.
Don't discard the ginger...chew it..it will give you the fiber and extra protective oomph!
Squeeze a slice of lemon and drink up.
I usually make a thermos of this and drink it all day. The ginger warms your body and detoxifies any irritant that causes the cough. It is especially good for wet cough as well. If you don't mind, you can use honey - it moistens your throat and keeps it from getting dry after a hackneyed cough.
Hope this helps!
You can find Lotus root at the produce section at the Hong Kong Market - google it and see if there is a store nearby.
thank you for your help! apparently there is a Hong Kong Supermarket located at Hester and Elizabeth St, wonderful, I will have to check it out! In the meantime, I had Whole Foods order fresh lotus root for me but it was a one-time deal! They said they could only make this one order and they wouldn't have it again. Interesting.
