I have been vegetarian for a long time. It's been a progressive thing for me (ie. no red meat for 14 years, no pork for 12, no chicken or turkey for 4 or 5 years now and no fish for a whopping 4 1/2 months!) but until last week I still ate eggs and dairy. I went mostly vegan all week and lost three pounds in the process. The one time I had dairy, I regretted it and was fortunate enough to remind myself that I really need to get it out of my diet. Today I begin my journey as a superhero! If I can continue to do as well as I have this week, I may have to come up with a superhero name!

Wow, that's great! I've been an on again off again Vegetarian for 19 years. I have been slowly moving to Vegan the past three years. Since getting Alicia's book about a month ago, I've been working on Super Hero status.
I was doing GREAT. Then the other day, I was eating at RFD and I had one of their Vegan Brownies as a Halloween treat for myself. I will tell you, I seriously got HIGH from the sugar!!! I got a little dizzy and for a couple of hours I could NOT STOP TALKING! It was funny, until I started to come down. It didn't help that my daughter had a cold and I think she gave it to me - or that the weather started to change and I think my allergies kicked up, but I will tell you, I have NO urge for sugar anymore!!! And I was a HUGE chocolate fiend!
Being a "Super Hero" has made me feel lighter than a feather! Even though I haven't lost a significant amount of weight, my clothes seem to fit me different. My husband says I look better than I have for months! I feel more energetic and I really feel great after I eat (unlike before when many times I felt like I swallowed a brick after eating!)
I am very excited about learning the new recipes! I grew up on Asian AMERICAN food - and although mostly healthy, meat and dairy were always incorporated. So although rice and seaweed are nothing new to me - mixing in beans, salted plums and rice syrup (to mention a few) really got my attention. Plus, being a mommy -- I've been taking many short cuts over the past few years, and getting back into unprocessed foods has been wonderful!
I look forward to more books and suggestions from Alicia!

Jenna I am so excited for you. Keep it up. When I cut out sugar about six months ago it was a dramatic difference and now I cant eat it makes me feel soooo sick and bloated. I hate it! i dont even crave it anymore.

Thanks Ashley! Yes, I cut almost all sugar out quite some time ago, but before I started eating like a Super Hero, I was still able to have a little here or there. Now that I've been eating like a Super Hero since Alicia's book came out...what like a month or two now... I am learning the HARD way that sugar is not even a once in a while thing for me anymore.
I did it again today - I like to go to eat at Real Food Daily in Hollywood for lunches and they have YUMMY deserts. For lunch I had sea greens, land greens, brown rice, black eyed peas and a pressed salad (YUM) then I ate a delicious vegan cupcake and within 10 minutes I began to feel a sugar hangover coming on. Now I just feel ill.

Since I started 2 weeks ago the best light dessert has been a mixture of pomegranate seeds, chocoloate covered cocoa nibs, sliced almonds, and coconut and it satisified my sweet tooth (http://ameliefille.blogspot.com/2009/11/pomegranate-power-mix.html). Other than that I have not had anything sweet until last night. I made Alicia's Peanut Butter Cups but with Almond butter (http://ameliefille.blogspot.com/2009/11/vegetarian-tostadas-and-chocolate.html) 2 weeks ago! I have only eaten one while my carnivore hubby has pretty much eaten them all. I had another one after 1.5weeks w/o sugar and I am super depressed today. I hate how sugar makes me feel.

I ate at Olive Garden Thursday evening - checked their menu and saw a minestrone dish. Then our server said "anyone who doesn't want cheese on their salad?'. I didn't say anything so ended up having cheese on salad. But that's okay. I felt really good about having vegetarian food [minus the cheese!] when everyone else was having some sort of cheese/meat dish.
At the school cafeteria, I had a bit of oven roasted turkey...didn't taste good at all. Not surprised since I don't like turkey anyway.
And then last evening, I had mutton/beef curry at an indian restaurant. All the time, I was eating it, I thought this doesn't taste so good after all...why am I eating this...but still ate it anyway!
I am glad my palette is changing more toward non-meat/dairy dishes. I am changing slowly but surely.
I figure if I don't like the meat dishes that I eat now and then, I will eventually stop eating them altogether!!
