Hi Ladies! My name is Coreen and I'm from Winnipeg, MB.
I've been a vegetarian for over a decade, but after reading 'Skinny Bitch" and 'The Kind Diet' I've been a vegan for almost 2 amazing/delicious months! I found that being a vegetarian was soooo easy because every restaurant offered at least SOMEthing without meat, but dining out as a vegan is much harder. At least cooking at home (which is what I prefure to do anyway) is delicious and easy, much easier than I had thought!
Gaylene, I'd love to read your blog! The past two months have been pretty exciting for myself, I'd like your daily take on it.
Did anyone have a peculiar vegan Thanksgiving like I did? Will you be celebrating Christmas with Omnivores?
Hi all, my name is Kether and I'm from Toronto. Can anyone recommend any good organic, sulfite free wines that are available from the LCBO (or anywhere else)? I can find some organic ones depending on what store I go to, but the one employee that I asked said that he didn't think it was possible to make wine without sulphites....is this true? Help!
Thanks Coreen! This Christmas will be my first Vegan. I will be with friends, not sure how that is going to play out. What is on your menu?
Hey, Kether, I have a really cool wine shop near me. I'll check this weekend. One of the ladies who works there seems to know everything. I'm sure she would have something.
Hey Kether, I work at the LCBO in Thunder bay and it is really hard to find a wine that doesn't contain sulphites at the store... um I think you have to go to Organic Local Wine makers if you have any in your neighborhood....? I will look into it for ya!
Thanks Gaylene, I can't wait to hear if you find any!
p.s. For anyone who is wondering - I had a "Tofurky" at Thanksgiving and it (and the gravy that came with it) was awful....Ugh.
Sorry you didn't like Tofurkey, Kether, but I very much disagree! While the gravy left something to be desired I am in love with Tofurky! It's hearty and rich in flavor, and the wild rice stuffing is amazing!! (Anyone have the recipe for the stuffing alone?) It's a processed food, of course, but for a holiday indulgence- it can't be beat! I've made my own from scratch, the Turtle Island one is waaaaaay better!
Hi my name is Kelly and I am from Vancouver BC. I have been vegan for 3 years. I started to add fish to my diet 6 months ago while training for another marathon. I thought I would have better results but the only thing that changed was my skin started breaking out and I had to tough time sleeping. Thanks to the book I have gotten back in touch with what I should be doing,
Hi Coreenis! I agree the stuffing was pretty tasty, it was the "meat" part that I found bland and the gravy was what really threw it over the edge for me..maybe I'll have to give it another go around Christmas - without the gravy!!!! Next time you have it try it with this- YUM :o)
Tasy Mushroom Gravy
1 Tbsp. veg. oil, 1 1/2 Cups diced onions, 4 Cups sliced mushrooms, 1/4 tsp. dried thyme, 1 bay leaf, pinch of salt, 1/4 cup dry sherry, 2 Tbsp shoyu, 1 3/4 cups veg. stock or water, 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper, 2 Tbsp. cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 Cup of cold water, additional salt or shoyu to taste if you wish...
Heat the oil in a pan and saute the onions for 5 min. Add the mushrooms, thyme, bay leaf and salt and cook until about 10 min until the mushrooms are tender. Add the sherry, shoyu and the stock or water and bring to a simmer. Add the cornstarch/water mixture and cook stirring constantly until clear and thickened. Remove from heat and discard the bay leaf.
Awesome on mashed potatoes!
Anyone from Thunder Bay, On. ?
