I was wondering, I have set my goal for the year to run a marathon. (Last year's goal was to fit back into the clothes hanging in my closet - check!) I have set my progressive event goals throughout the year but the refueling during long runs... I know nothing about that. So, fellow bloggers, during the longs runs, how do you refuel? I've seen something about a vegan friendly energy gel called carb boom something or other but did not know if anyone has ever tried it. I look forward to the input!

ah this is such an exciting thread! THRIVE is AMAZING, i'm training for my first half-marathon and following his advice has speeded up my recovery time ridiculously.
if anyone wants to follow my training and keep me updated on yours so that we can support one another, go to my blog: www.atalantagoesveg.blogspot.com
I'd really love to hear thoughts, advice, and anything from you athletes!

I usually take a baggy of food with me. It's easiest in cooler weather, when i'm wearing a running jacket with pockets. I'll pack dried fruit, usually banana chips. I just throw them in a little zip-lock baggie and go!

I Also make sure i'm drinking during the long run too! Sport drinks are good too if you aren't eating anything ,but i'm not really a fan. For long runs, you want to try to take in 100 to 300 calories every hour.

I looked up the Carb Boom. I've never tried it but i think it's worth a try if you like energy gel!

I also love Odwalla bars. they are healthy and they always seem to sit well even when i'm running! It took me awhile to get used to the feeling of food and water sloshing in my belly haha, but i got used to it.

I'm going to start training in March for my second 1/2 marathon in the fall. I'm excited to listen to everyone's stories and to start sharing my own!!

Good luck TMcD and everyone!

Jen W - I'm doing a 1/2 Iron too!! Mines in Oliver, BC... the boyfriend is going Ironman Canada in Penticton, but as this will be my first year of tri's, I think next year might be the full iron attempt ;)
Glad to see other people are into Vega... I wait until it goes on sale somewhere and buy like3 barrels!!
I'm also finding a good lentil based stewish soup thin is a good - about-fourty-five-minutes before I run meal... enough time to get energy from it, but solid enough to stay with me.
I also love sharkies carb gummies... they are veg, and I am going to do some research to make sure they are vegan too, but from the looks of it they are GTG... and SSOOOOO YUMMY! I got them for the first time in a welcome kit at the rocky mountain 1/2 marathon in Canmore last fall and they pretty much made that run worth it!!
anyone have nike plus that they are training with?search for me... mintmojo...
have an amazing day kind lifers!!

I too am training for my first half marathon, I've been thinking about trying the Vega shakes because I've heard good things about them and I have to eat most of my meals on the go, but they are very expensive! I did the math and for the large one it's costing $5 a serving! Is it worth it?

I checked on Amazon.com (they have a grocery section that carries TONS of vegan/veggie stuff, and free shipping on orders over $35!) and they carry Vega chocolate protein powder for $65 for 37.8 ounces. It works out to about $1.75 an ounce, so that may be a cheaper alternative. I've had success ordering food from Amazon before, and I may try this as at the moment, it's cheaper than my local Whole Foods. Best of luck on your training! I'm doing a half marathon this fall myself :)

I just ordered off of Amazon.com 3rd party site they have called iHerb.com for the smaller ounce size and travel packets of Vega. This site is awesome - I know I just saved about $20 ordering both of those (as opposed to buying at a WF) and because my order was over $60 (well $63), I qualified for FREE Shipping! Thank you Wendy for telling us about the amazon.com option. I love being healthy and saving money at the same time !!! Happy Sunday Everyone!

i am soooo excited by this thread! i was just tooling around because i am a runner - doing my third half marathon this spring - and i just went vegan/superhero - and wanted to see if there was anyone else out there! love you all, congrats and good luck!!!!!!!

i make my own smoothies - almond milk, almond butter, a whole lot of fruit (frozen), and a few leaves of dark leafies (usually kale) - may sound crazy but it tastes delicious. sometimes i will sweeten with agave, but usually doesn't need it.

i admit however that for my long runs, i'm a sucking candy gal. i just need that little sugar burst. don't tell ;-)

Hey,

Congrats on your training for your half marathon ladies. I love to run as well. I'm actually thinking of doing a triathlon..I'm just trying to get the right balance of protein and lean out. How much protein are you guys taking in daily? I also love the chocolate vega soo good. I also..I do a spinach shake made with rice milk, mango or banana, some vanilla and a few ice cubes so good and refreshing.
Thanks
Cole
