Like Justin said, I'm also a huge proponent of non-breakfast foods for breakfast. Alicia talks about have your dinner leftovers for breakfast and I have been doing that for years. I especially like some sort of hearty pasta dish for breakfast.
Also, I've been experimenting with sweet quinoa dishes for breakfast lately. You can make a big pot of quinoa for the week and add different stuff each day. One day this week I had it with a baked, chopped apple and agave nectar and soy milk, tomorrow I'm having it with pureed pumpkin, brown rice syrup, soymilk, and pumpkin pie spice mix- I can't wait till the morning to eat it!! :)

Skipping or minimizing dinner has my blood sugar perfect without medication and has me looking forward to a big breakfast. I stick with steamed veggies but a complete meal for breakfast is a good way to stoke your metabolism.

These are some great ideas - thanks!

I find that I absolutely need to start my day with protein though, or I feel ill. I have been having smoothies with protein powder. Does anyone have any other thoughts?

Kashi & cereals are good for me at night but I can't tolerate them in the am.

Thanks!

brooke - i've made some smoothies and popped in some nut butters, or tahini.

ie.
frozen strawberries
freshly squeezed orange juice
bit o soy
blob of tahini

whirl it up, quite refreshing!

My personal favorite is spelt toast (or a fresh whole grain), with a very light smear of vegan butter, 1/2 fresh avacado spread on top with a drizzle of flax seed oil and black pepper... Super delicious, filling, and takes about 3 minutes to make.

Thanks for the protein suggestions guys! I have been loving almond butter + almond milk + dates + bananas.

Erin: Everything is better with avocado. Great idea!

My difficulty with breakfast is when I need to eat it out at a restaurant. Any ideas for that? I'm not big on sweet in the a.m. so fruit is obvious but not very appealing to me. Other than dry toast or fruit, does anyone have good suggestions for restaurant breakfasts? TIA!

My smoothie recipe-

Grind on high one tablespoon- flax seed, hemp seed, wheat germ, with one cup cold water, add one cup of frozen fruit (any kind but berries are best, low glycemic, low calorie, and full of antioxies), I sometimes do banana too. You can freeze getting old bananas in freezer bags too (take the peel off first).

It's pretty much a perfect breakfast.

I normally do 1/2 cup cut steel cut oats, with water or rice milk pop it in the microwave for a minute or two. Add a tablespoon of vegan butter, hand full of chopped walnuts, almonds or pecans, some cinammon, ground flax seed, tablespoon of agave nectar and some raisins. It is so good! And good protein/complex carb ratio to me. And it is super easy to make in about 5 minutes.
