My parents just called and freaked out when I told them I was going vegan and demanded to know where I was going to get my Vitamin D.Thoughts?

From the SunShine :) or you can supplement, although there are sources in food too... High quality Veg. oils, mushrooms :)

Dark leafy greens too, I think, right? :) I've been incorporating a lot more - I'm waiting on bloodwork and my doc talked about checking my Vitamin D -I'll let you know!

Our bodies make Vitamin D in response to natural sunlight exposure. It is the best way to get Vitamin D- it's harder to get enough from any food sources but mushrooms and fortified foods do have some. Vitamin D is fat soluble so we can store it ,so we don't need it every day like water soluble vitamins such as C. The recommendation is about 15 to 20 minutes of exposure to sunlight without sunscreen a day. I'm thinkin' this is one of the reasons why macrobiotics recommends a daily outdoor walk? I have read that Vitamin D is extremely important for reducing cancer risk.

Amen to that, Lea - we need to get so much more regular exposure than we're getting as a general society...and the recommendation is so little, I really have not much of an excuse - LOL!

Me neither- no excuse. But do I get 15 minutes a day without sunscreen in the winter? Not a chance! I run from car to bulding only when I must leave the house. It's no good. I gotta get out there and walk!

I hear ya, girl - I'm in Chicago and winter can be utterly inhospitable..and I'll bet walking indoors with lots of light ain't gonna cut it, right?

No wonder I suffer from S.A. D.D. come February or so! :)

Oh no I can't even imagine. I'm in Philly and the cold crushes me. Yuck! I dream of moving to California but I can't help choosing all of my people here over the weather there!
