Not eating meat, but still eating dairy...

Am I completely defeating the purpose of all this by still eating dairy? Should I cut all dairy out right away? I never hear, well see, anyone talk about eating cheese and I feel like an imposter sometimes! I am not eating meat of any kind but I still do eat cheese, yogurt and stuff with eggs in it. I know how awful dairy is and I DO want to cut it all out, but I am afraid if I do too much cutting out all at once then I'll just slip right off the wagon. Is anyone else dealing with this?

Hi Amanda - I don't think you are completely defeating the purpose by still eating dairy. I believe Alicia says in the book that any time you pick a non-animal product over an animal product, it's a good thing!

You are right Amy! I need to look at it like that more often! I wish I could just dive in head first but it's kind of great having such an important goal in my future!

Just take it bit by bit, and it's easier. It's better to cut back on dairy and be happy than beat yourself up when you have it. If you don't feel it's something you can do right now, the time might not be right.
Experiment with non-dairy products and see how you like them, and just change bit by bit. It's about what you DO, not what you don't do :)

It's not a waste to not give up dairy. It's addicting. You should give this a read:

Each step you take is one step closer. That's what matters. You didn't start this life eating meat right away but you've given it up. However; you did start with some type of milk. Even if it's formula. It's been in you since day one and can be hard to get rid of.

Hi Amanda,

I know what you're going thru. I'm taking it step by step myself. i just gave up meat almost 2 weeks ago. I'm still eating dairy every so often- cheese and eggs mostly - but at least staying aware of the ingredients in what I'm eating. As you go to the grocery store try alternatives like soy or rice milk so that you'll eventually make the switch w/o overthinking it.

I think it's more important for me to take it step by step so I don't freak my body and mind out. The way I'm thinking is once I get used to completely going w/o meat it'll be easier to move on to the next step, which is dairy, then sugars, etc. I believe Alicia talks about it in her book and it's really whatever you feel comfortable with. Either way it's great! =)

i'm in the same boat...i'm not eating meat but still eating dairy. Well, i'm finishing what I have in my fridge, as I don't want to waste food. As I replenish my fridge I will start to try alternatives like rice milk and soy products.

as others have said, each step you take is an step towards the person you want to be...today it's meat, tomorrow it's dairy. I don't think you can make such a huge change in your life overnight

good luck!

I'm doing the same. I gave up meat but am still eating dairy and eggs. That being said, I'm working on it. I just bought my second flavor of Purely Decadent a non dairy coconut ice cream that is SO GOOD!

Check out my blog - I'm blogging about my adventure in the journey. One thing I'm going to talk about is how I "flirt" with cutting out dairy and eggs - which I still eat right now.

One day at a time is my motto!

I also just ordered the book Go Dairy Free - by the author of the website above -Go Dairy free.

i was vegetarian my whole life and then when i found out about being vegan my life kind of went for a tailspin. It was really hard for me to cut out dairy because I realized it made up most of my diet. As i dove into veganism, i realized how unhealthy i was being, even if i wasn't eating meat. You'll notice that as you cut it out you start to dislike the taste, and now if i eat something with dairy in it, i get a really bad stomach ache. Try thinking about it from an ethical point of you. The poor cows are constantly pregnant and then get taken away to be veal or dairy cows themselves. Once i read that i didn't care how much i like milk in my tea or icecream i knew that it wasn't worth it.
