Any migraineurs out there?

I'm currently taking Frova as an abortive medication but I've heard some bad things about triptans and how they cause rebound headaches. I'm doing the vegan diet to actually help me regulate my migraines. The diet actually cuts out a large majority of my trigger foods so that helps. I've also been doing yoga every day in the morning. That seems to be helping. Any other vegans with migraines that have med advice or other advice?

i used to have them!
but never had one ever again after changing diet....maybe do mostly superghero and a little vegan....and see what happens...yoga great meditation great. and you could also check in with an amazing woman named ida...for more emotional help...in case that is a trigger...for me i think it was just food.
let me know if you want ida #.
otherwise...how long you been vegan?
give it a while and it should go away...and if you want to get off your meds...check out a macro councilor...that would really help you!
good luck...i know they suck,,,,i remember wanting to die when i had one...so sorry you have them....

Thanks for the advice Alicia. I'd love to have Ida's number- you can message it to me if you like.
I've been doing the vegan thing for 15 days and been vegetarian for 6 years. Thanks for the sympathy- it sucks to have them but it's always nice to meet other people who understand- and I'm glad you don't have to deal with them anymore.

Hi Mandy,
I also suffer with migraines. Right now I take 100mg of Imitrex as an abortive. At my worst I'd been getting 9 migraines a month.
I am a vegetarian and have tried to go vegan but I'm finding it really difficult. I'm also about 20 lbs overweight and I want to lose weight in order to help with the migraines, as well. What do you do to stay on track? I find that I'm very tempted when go out to eat.

ME! But this year things have changed for my migraines. They run on both sides of my family, and till this year, I had never found any triggers. I was on daily Propranolol (a blood pressure medication) as a preventative for four years, along with Imitrex as needed, only the pills didn't work, so I had to use nasal spray, which stopped working too, then I went to self-injections! Even with all that, a year ago I started getting more migraines, about 1 per week. The doctor then wanted to keep me on the propranolol and ADD a daily anti-seizure medication as an additional preventative. WHAT?? I just couldn't bare the thought of going on even more drugs that would mess with my body! And they didn't even seem to be helping anyway. Last February I read an article about aspartame (Equal, Nutrsweet) which I was using A LOT of in diet sodas (4 a day) and foods (yogurt, snacks). I cut out ALL artifical sweeteners. I haven't had a migraine in 10 months! And I went off all the drugs. While my trigger may not be your trigger (although I would suggest giving up artifical sweeteners if you haven't already), I do think that by eating a vegan diet, you are taking away almost any trigger. Most triggers are processed or artifical which you don't get as a vegan. I am here for support if you need me, as I totally understand where you are coming from! I was hospitalized many times with migraines that caused me to lose my sight and to lose speech entirely. I don't think a lot of people understand what migraines can really do to a person - NOT "just a headache"! Good luck!

Syeera,What a wonderful story. You are entirely correct that not all sufferers have the same trigger but what a great thing to be able to identify and eliminate it. I describe the process as being more like a detective than a doctor. When successful, the result is awesome! Congrats.

I used to get migrains that would take me out. I have learned to catch it in the beginning. I have a 'cocktail' that works WONDERS!! I get a cup of juice or tea and put in 2 drops of Rosemary, 2 drops of Skullcap, 2 drops of Feverfew, and 1 drop of White Willow and drink it like a shot. After 30 minutes I do it again if the pain is still lingering. It took me a LONG time to find something that worked. All those tinctures can be found at an herbal shop and some are even at Whole Foods. Good luck!

Wow what great advice. My daughter also gets bad migraines but they seem to be around the time just before and during her period. So my thoughts are that hers are hormonaly driven? I used to have them also but menopause has stopped them all together.....Woohooo! Perhaps have your hormone levels checked to see if you are having an over abundance of estrogen? I also have read that artificial sweetners like aspertame cause false diagnosis for illnesses like lupus, fibromyalgia (sp), multiple schlerosis, muscular dystrophy and others. I wish I could remember where I read that for you all.

ME! As a matter of fact, I've been having migraines (sometimes just the migraine aura, where I lose my vision, but no headache) for TWELVE DAYS STRAIGHT. Syeera, like you I quit aspartame last spring and went from having migraines once or twice a month to once every three months or so. I really thought I had turned a corner and that they were finally under control. I have no idea what brought on these daily migraines. Even worse, I've been experiencing episodes of extreme vertigo with them, which my doctor said is relatively normal for some migraine suffers but is a new symptom to me. Last night, on top of having a headache, I felt like the room was spinning uncontrollably and it was miserable. I went to the doctor today, who prescribed daily Propanolol. I hate the thought of being prescription drugs but am at the end of my rope at this point! It's just so crazy because one month ago, I was a healthy 26 year old who ran a marathon, and now I can't run to the end of the block without getting a migraine.
I bought The Kind Diet about 3 days into this recent migraine attack and have not eaten any meat since Thanksgiving. I've had a couple slip-ups with dairy but have been doing well otherwise. Hopefully as I get more into a superhero diet, it will help with the migraines. Anyway, it's comforting to know that there are others on here who have struggled with this condition. Hopefully we can all figure out some answers together!

I've had migraines since I hit puberty, which were the result of hormone fluctuations during my monthly cycle. My dr. prescribed Imitrex which got me through my day, but never completely took away the symptoms. (I also had that weird side affect from Imitrex where my throat felt like it had a lump in it!) Anyway, since I changed my birth control method my migraines have mostly stopped, unless I have one of my trigger foods or red wine. Most of my trigger foods have been eliminated since going vegan, so I hardly have an attack at all now.
