Today's Toronto Star newspaper came with a glossy 2010 Milk Calendar. Among the milk "facts" listed were the following gems:

"Chocolate Milk has the same 16 essential nutrients as Milk, with less sugar than unsweetened apple juice."

"Milk is an excellent source of both calcium and Vitamin D, nutrients that work together to help build bones and teeth."

And of course, the calendar lists the recommended servings of "Milk & Alternatives" for various age groups--pursuant to Canada's Food Guide.

My favorite quote is on the back cover. "1/3 OF OUR CHILDREN AREN'T GETTING ENOUGH MILK." -- (capitalized in the original) -- followed by a statement imploring parents to contact their child's school to enroll their child in the school's milk program to ensure they get enough milk. It even refers to a government source to legitimize the statement.

Members of this site know how misleading these statements are, and how damaging milk is to our long-term health and environment. But the dairy industry is strong, and we must be ever-vigilant to their deceptions.
