So happy I read the book! Wow. i had no idea about the damage the meat industry is doing:(
Well I've made it a week. My fridge is, shock horror, full of veggies, fruit, beans, Almond milk (which i love)... it's normally empty but for a bottle of champers and some eye cream! LOL
I'm planning on going to the Farmers Market, but I'm totally confronted by that.
I work out a lot so i need more protein than most.

I've had Quorn, which i realize now is not Vegan, Boca burgers, Seitan, and some lentil things.
What is the deal with Soy? It's PACKED with protein. I don't want to get man boobs (that's what they say will happen) and I'm wondering if it's too much to have tofurky brand all the time?
Any ideas?
Should I bust out the pots and pans and start cooking up a storm? would it be bad if i froze and nuked??
thanks
David

I'm not an expert, but you probably need less protein than the fitness industry tells you. I'm thinking lots of beans -- also from a guy fitness perspective, check out Craig Ballantyne. He's a trainer who's been experimenting with veganism and not eating processed food.

Also check out Robert Cheeke, a vegan bodybuilder, at both of his websites.

And I agree with Jenny - beans, bean soups, bean spreads, etc. And some tempeh is NOT soy, so check out some of the non-soy versions.
Also check out Thrive, by Brendan Brazier. He's an endurance athlete, not bodybuilding, but he has some good advice. He's also the creator of Vega, a vegan protein shake.

i don't think freezing and nuking is the end of the world. i'm a busy student and i freeze and microwave when things are hectic. and i'm perfectly healthy.

you won't get hormonal problems from tofu. eat up.

i'd try to avoid eating a ton of the over processed meat analogs. i'd suggest eating a lot of tofu, tempeh, beans and lentils. bean burritos, lentil soup, hummus.. all good stuff!

You should also check out "Skinny Bastard" by Rory Freedman. It's also a great book with a lot of great tips.

As for the soy/tofu issue, as long as you're eating it in moderation you won't be growing man boobs anytime soon :p

Also try eating more leafy green veggies, beans, nutritional yeast, quinoa, nuts, peanut butter, etc. These are all great non-soy sources of protein and if you do a bit of Googling, I'm sure that you can find a ton more.

I agree with Tracie and recommend Skinny Bastard. My hubby is a marathon runner (& vegan) -- he likes tofu, and does eat a lot of soy (no man boobs!) but he also likes to eat beans, nuts, quinoa and greens -- its insane how much protein is in spinach and quinoa !!

oh, and you can always supplement with brown rice, soy or hemp protein powders. I really like hemp. Hubby likes soy. Neither of us carred for brown rice. Vega is a good company to try -- I love their sport drink, hubby likes all the recipes in THrive Diet for his workouts/recovery

You might like appreciate reading about the Engine 2 approach to veganism. It's written by a guy who is a triathlete and firefighter, Rip Esselstyn.

You can get ALL the protein you need from leafy greens, beans, quinoa, etc.

And yeah, I reiterate what people said about Thrive and Vega. Brandon Brazier is awesome.
