I don't feel like I'm getting enough fiber!!! I find that I'm constipated on this plan. I've been a vegan (mostly!) for about 2 years, and my diet was centered around grains, fruit, veggies, and soy. I have been carying around about 10 more pounds than I want, so I decieded to try Superhero, and I've been following it pretty closely. Usually carrot/daikon drink and miso soup in the am, rice or quinoa for lunch w stir-fried veggies and salad, apple and Ezekial toast w/ peanut butter in the afternoon, and rice/quinoa with veggies (and maybe tofu, tempeh, seitan, or beans) for dinner. I've been at it for 2 weeks, and lost 1/2 pound. What gives? And what can I do about the fiber? Are home-made bran muffins ok for superheroes? What about bran cereal? Vegan chilli (I know we aren't really supposed to go for tomato)?
Sarah, I had the constipation problems too and I still do a little. I eat bran cereal. In fact I do oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast. I add daikon to all my salad and veggie dishes and I also bought Superseed from Wholefoods and do a half a scoopful of it every other day and thats helping the most so far. I also do Ezekiel bread with tofurkey for lunch alot with a large salad and in the afternoon i have a banana with peanut or almond butter. I find that when I cut out my fruits I get more constipated so I do an apple or pear and 1 banana a day so 2 fruits a day.
I really don't need to lose but yes I have lost a pound.
Flax is great for constipation. The oil is the best. I put it on cooked vegetables or grain. About 1 tablespoon a day. And I put ground flax seeds and dried fruit on top of oatmeal or brown rice porridge.
heya sarah - how frustrating! i too have experienced my fair share of unhappy intestinal days (not while on the kind diet) but just in general.
a trick that helps me - is having a hot cup of water with lemon in it in the am, prior to eating breakfast. it wakes up my bowels as if to say, 'good morning wee bowels, time to rise and shine.'
hope you can find some relief!
peace
Deep breathing is great and a little belly rub before you get out of bed:)
I'm having major constipation issues since I've been into the macrobiotics. I think it's because I am eating way more than I did before. I wasn't eating enough and I don't think my body knows how to handle 3 meals a day yet. I'm thinking if I keep feeding myself healthy food it will work itself out. The bloating is miserable though!
I've been on the Vegan plan for only 5 days and I know it takes a few weeks for one's body to "detox" from the Nasty Food, but with all the whole grains and veggies I've been eating, I thought my bowels would be moving along better. I have a history of constipation (before becoming Vegan I would poop usually every other day, and they seemed to be a healthy size and consistency) but now not only am I still not pooping every day, my poops are harder and broken up, like pellets. I think maybe I need to drink more water. I'm not bloated, though. If anything I feel lighter and think I look slimmer. I haven't weighed myself so I don't know if I've lost weight. Anyway, I'm just gonna keep on truckin' and hope everything balances out eventually. I'm only slightly concerned about this because I've never felt better!
I've really upped my grain servings since incorporating much more macrobiotics in my vegan lifestyle. I can relate to the constipation thing. For the first few days I was really constipated, but it's a lot better now. Something you could do is take Psyllium husk powder. I did that when I (naively) went on a low card diet a few years ago. It's pure fiber and keeps you regular; just make sure to get lots of water in addition! I got mine at the health food store, and all it is is pure psyllium husk powder, no additives. A warning though, either mix it in a smoothie or have a fresh glass of juice or water on hand after taking it, because although it has virtually no taste, the texture is less than appealing. It works though!
