The Beginning of my Vegan Journey!

Hello Everyone! Today is day 2 of my first steps to being vegan and becoming a heathier person, inside and out. I will admit that I actually used to role my eyes when someone said they were vegan. It's funny... say the word 'vegetarian' and people accept it just fine, but say the word 'vegan' and most people think you're nuts! But the truth is, the only real difference is dairy. I have started on this journey in an effort to feel better. As I am aging (I am 37), I am finding that I feel so heavy and weighed down a lot, and I feel backed up all the time! I have already learned that my mood is directly affected by the food choices I make.
And so, after reading "The Kind Diet", suddenly so much made sense! I appreciated Alicia's straight-forward, casual approach to explaining the Kind Life. I never once felt the philosophy being shoved down my throat.
I have always felt intense emotional sadness when an animal experiences pain or cruelty. This, mixed with my desire to be healthy, made me want to make a change. I started yesterday, and so far... so good. It is tough though, as my husband and kids are definitely not on board, so I have lots of temptations in the kitchen, and I have to cook one dinner for me and another for my family. But I am hopefull that I can do this!
Yay for you, Syeera!!! You can do this, no doubt about it. This web-community has been so inspiring and helpful, you will see...
My family is omni too, and giving up dairy and eggs was the hardest sacrifice I ever made diet wise, but you will find more things every day that all of you can enjoy together.
Eventually, maybe you can strike a deal with them- if they want meat/dairy, they can fix it themselves or eat it as a once in a while thing when they are out. (that is my current goal- i don't fix meat anymore, but dairy/eggs are still around because they still insist).
Don't give up, you deserve to take care of yourself!
Congrats you can so do it. Like you I am a new vegan, and my whole family, sisters and brothers included are all meat eaters. You will be fine.
I will be keeping an eye out for you and all your success.
This is an exciting time and well worth it!!!
Syeera,
Welcome to this community. My story is similar to yours and I can tell you the feeling of heaviness does go away and you will feel lighter physically and mentally. I read that the high protein diets cause people to be more grumpy and diets full of grain and vegetables makes for a happier person...I do believe this to be true!
