I have always had really thick hair and still have a lot of hair, but recently, since I went vegan about 3 weeks ago, (was a veggie for 2 years before) I've noticed that when I brush my hair more strands are coming out in the brush than usual and when I wash it too. Does anyone know if i could be missing a vitamin or something that could be causing this? Thanks for any help!
Well the thing with hair is that the follicles need to be nourished and stimulated. If you're not eating meat, which is a good source of vitamins like biotin and fat which nourishes the scalp, I suggest taking a daily vitamin. Vitamins A, B, C and fat soluble vitamins are also important. Also, remember in general, massage your scalp at least once a week with oil (coconut, olive, amla, argan) to stimulate blood circulation.

hi kim,
what are you eating?
can you give me an average days menu?
thanks
I am having this same problem. I became a vegan 3 years ago and since then I have had hair loss and I have also had an increase in skin problems. Any suggestions?
I actually had the opposite problem! I have been losing hair for nearly a year and then discovered that I have an allergy to dairy and eggs (which I ate a lot of and contributed to itchy skin and other problems). Since cutting dairy and eggs out, my hair loss hasn't been as bad and I can see a new crop of baby hairs coming in. It might be worth it for you to get an allergy test or try a food elimination diet?
Well, sounds like I am not the only one. Maybe I will mention this to the doctor the next time I go.
Alicia,
On a typical day I have been eating:
breakfast:
a bowl of steel cut oats
a piece of whole wheat bread or a whole wheat english muffin with smart balance spread on it
a glass of orange juice
lunch:
steamed broccoli
a whole wheat tortilla wrap with:
quinoa, black beans, spinach, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms
dinner:
Amy's black bean vegetable soup
some steamed broccoli or carrots or green beans, sometimes baked french fries (i know, bad, but they are yummy)
That's a basic day, I have also been eating Amy's roasted vegetable pizza when I need something quick. Sometimes some popcorn in the evening. I do need to try some new foods, I know, but this was not that drastic of a change for me since I have already been meat-free for 2 years. I just recently, 3 weeks ago, stopped eating all things with milk in them, cheese and eggs.
p.s. Does anyone else find this super groovy that Alicia Silverstone is responding to our posts?!? Thanks Alicia! Love your book! Skinny Bitch got me to go vegetarian 2 years ago, but The Kind Diet finally got me to vegan. If only I could convice the hubby...
Has anything else changed in your life? Just wondering because I also have hair loss but it happened after the birth of my children and it's been going on for a long time with my 2nd child but I've been breastfeeding him much longer.
Hormonal changes can affect hair loss. My hair started falling out when I stopped breastfeeding my 2nd child about 10 months ago and its still coming out! I plan to talk to the doctor about it at my next physical though. I have read that thyroid problems can cause hair loss and thyroid issues run in my family. A simple blood test can check your thyroid function as well as checking for iron deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies.
I started losing hair about a month ago. I learned that hair fallout is usually as a result of something that went on within the last 3 months. So start back that far. I had a serious bout of menopausal hot flashes. The hair loss was pretty severe, but has slowed down in the last week. I don't attribute this at all to going vegan. I just started the vegan diet 4 days ago. Look for things such as hormonal changes, stress, illness....
You are probably lacking in protein hun, beans, beans and beans. Try lentils and black beans, also do you ever use flaxseed? That would help too. I also eat TONS of spinach!
