Hi my name is Gilly and I am addicted to coffee! I am starting tomorrow bc I am finally done with the difficulty sleeping. I am so clean in so many ways. Been 95 percent vegan for the past 12 years (met my husband at the organic harvest cafe on 53rd and 3rd and basically we both never looked back except a few times during my 3 pregnancies). Buuuuut, coffee was always there..even when I was RAW for 6 weeks! Only during juice cleanses and Yom Kippur did I skip the drug I love. But, here's the deal, I know it's bad for my adrenals and skin and hello, sleep. All u moms, we will sleep better without it. So I just had a green tea this afternoon and I will have the herba mate stuff tomorrow and likely have a wicked headache. But it is time. I would like to help each ther through this transition. Thanks for having this forum alicia! Wishing everyone health. I agree also, that stopping eating animals was way easier than this for me. But, I know I can do it and my body with thank me. Xo

Gilly, I am right there with you. I avoided giving up coffee for months while I've been transitioning to a vegan diet. A few weeks ago, I cut it way back...until I found myself at Starbucks, oops! Even though I've been drinking it regularly, I've noticed I don't need coffee in the morning like I use to before going vegan, but if I don't have it I get a headache by mid-morning. Yesterday, I had one cup and today I haven't had any. I'm a little distracted and sleepy, but I know it will be worth it by next week. My body will be much happier without all that caffeine. You can do it!

Coffee is not bad for you...just need moderation; you don't have to give it up! I drink coffee almost every day and don't feel bad.

I second that Chia, I have about 2 cups a day. Caffeine is good for the skin too!

I read the book a few years ago but I don't remember the part about giving up coffee (probably because I don't drink it!). Why does one need to give up coffee completely? I thought it had benefits if you can just not be ridiculously addicted to it... I am closing day 2 without pop... no seriously this is a big deal... I quit drinking coke while I was pregnant and then when I had him i went craaaazy and then I started back to school and went craaaazier... I'm embarrassed to say I easily put away 3 large cokes a day and if I was feeling extra bad about my earlier choices I would have another... so day 2 without it.... and I feel like crap! ha! I know it's just withdraws and it will pass but man my head hurts! so I feel ya coffee drinkers :/

Anyways back to my original question (because the hubs does drink it in the morning) whats the problem with coffee?

Hi Jessica well done on quitting and to you all! I struggled with quitting for a few years. Would always dread stopping because of the horrendous withdrawl headaches I'd get- one time it was so bad I almost vomited! In the last year I really tried and knew I needed an alternative. Caro (Nestle I know..) is a great alternative (although I use another product, Inka, but it's similar). Any rye barley coffee substitute (sounds awful but dont judge till you try) would be good. I'm pregnant now and off caffeine and to be honest, I don't feel like it at all (miracle :)) Good luck everyone ! x

Pero is another good coffee substitute. I've cut down but refuse to eliminate coffee; drinking coffee has been correlated with decreased risk for both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and doesn't bother me if I don't drink more than one cup a day. My dad had Parkinson's so even if there's the slightest chance it's prophylactic, I'm taking it.

I watched on Dr. Oz a Coffee alternative called Chicory Root! Worth trying in place of your Coffee fix :)

I loved coffee-alternatives before I even liked coffee! In Germany, there is a coffee subsitute made of grains (I think wheat), malt and chicory root that you can brew like normal coffee. It tastes AMAZING and you can even add "milk"-foam to it. But there are many Caro-alternatives, too, some of them are even organic!!

I gave up coffee as well, have to along with eating a plant-based diet in order to quit smoking. It works and even makes the smoking easy to quit, 6 months down the road is when I get nailed with a stressor and cave! There is a tea called Kombucha tea, I believe by the Yogi brand. That with honey and I don't miss coffee a bit, best green tea I have ever had in my life!
