I think that beekeepers and their hives should never cease to exist, because the "wild" bee could never survive on it's own. This is one of those cases where human intervention is necessary. Humans have to help to keep the bee populations on a good level.. And we all know how important thos lovely bees are..

It is of course up to each person what they do, but here are some pointers on why Honey is NOT good for eating or as a Vegan:

1. Honey bees transform saccharides into honey by a process of REGURGITATION, a number of times, until it is partially digested. The bees do the regurgitation and digestion as a group. (YUM!)

2. Honey is produced by bees as a food source. In cold weather or when fresh food sources are scarce, bees use their stored honey as their source of energy. (we would all be angry if the ONLY food we had in our pantry all winter (3 months to 6 months) was taken from us, leaving us unsure where our next meal will come from since there are no sources during winter)

3. Fresh honey is a supersaturated liquid, containing more sugar than the water can typically dissolve at ambient temperatures. (honey is an extreme sugar. it is supersaturated, meaning super sweet, and has almost no water, no fiber, etc. It is made for bees to live on not people, their bodies burn it for fuel very efficiently, we just like the addictive sweetness.)

Also for what it is worth, Bees do not need us, they have done just fine, UNTIL we came on the scene and our globalization, manufacturing and weather changing habits started to destroy them.----------------

Bees have been around for at least 100 million years (since the Cretaceous period). The oldest known human harvest was 8,000 years ago. (They were around so many, many millions of years before us and did just fine.)-------------------

Also, in terms of health, the honey is very ACIDIC with the average pH of honey being 3.9, but can range from 3.4 to 6.1.-----------

And for anyone worried about too much sugar, diabetes, insulin resistance, or the Glycemic Index, Honey's G.I. ranges from 31 to 78, depending on the variety. (Now that is some serious sugar)
