A Vegan Diabetic?

Hi everyone,
My mother is diabetic and had started to go vegan until she talked with her dietitian. He told her because she is hypoglycemic she could slip into a comma if her protein levels fell and should therefore not go off dairy. She does eat out a lot and even was being vegan, so I don't know if that factors into it at all as her food choices still aren't the best. Any responses would be appreciated!

Your mother's dietitian was ill informed, check out PCRM. Dr. Barnard's book on diabetes is a great start.

I agree with Justin. I've only heard very positive things about Veganism and diabetes.

Yes, I've read a lot of evidence of diabetes' symptoms and medications being reduced by eating a vegan diet. What I do know as a diabetic is I've been urged to go twith the South Beach diet and diets that continue with meat proteins which has me suspicious after reading so much about veganism ( a nutritionist at Tech and a well- meaning dr. I love, but still..). She will just have to continue to monitor her sugars throughout the day- I've seen positive changes that I attribute to this plant- based diet. Good luck to her and to you in your support of her. ;)

I start each morning with a breakfast of vegetables. It does wonders for my blood sugar and I feel great.

I am hypoglocemic and on the verge of cfrd (cystic fibrosis related diabetes). So, I already eat diabetic friendly :) I have been doing fine, it takes a little more planning, just keep in mind it isn't just about not eating meat but getting good carbs, and watch the amount of carbs etc... I have done fine, even better with my blood sugars lately... But, I don't mention it to my doc. it just makes them mad!!! But, every case is different.
