I want to do more than change the way I eat...

I'm looking for different ways that I can reach out and help animals besides just changing my eating habits. (Which is a big change and is very hard...) I need something to focus on besides the fact that I am eating differently... I know I can volunteer at animal sanctuaries and shelters...
What else can I do? I can think of a problem I know of...
The way they treat animals in my part of town is atrocious. My dog got loose the other day and when I was searching for her I saw more than 5 dogs chained to short leads in their back yards (that's illegal in my city) and I saw 7 (in 2 hours!) dogs roaming the streets within 10 minutes of my house... several with broken leads. Last year alone they put down 30,000 dogs in my city. And a friend of mine got attacked by a pack of roving dogs last year... The problem just seems so large I don't even know where to start.... Help? Advice from people who have dealt with similar things?

Volunteering is a great way to help and it is much appreciated by everyone!!! I volunteer at my local SPCA and there's so much to do its ridiculous: cleaning, filing, feeing, walking, training, web stuff, adoptathons...what is your talent? I'm sure there's an awesome skill you have that would make a real difference!
