Hello! I have been a vegetarian since last summer. I got the the kind diet book for christmas and I really do want to be a vegan! But the problem is I live in a small town and we don't really have any vegan food here. It seems like every food store I go to has dairy, sugar, etc in it. I usually go to safeway because it's closer to my house. Any suggestions? Thanks! :o)

Aw, that's no fun not having fun vegan products when you first start out. Where do you live? My safeway has an ever expanding selection of organic and vegan items. You might want to email your Safeway and see if they might stock a few items like Vegenaise, Soy Milk, and tofu and start there.

When I first started out, I had to spend a lot of time reading labels! Now I have my whole family trained to spot the bad ingredients in like 10-15 seconds.

Pasta, beans, and vegetables and fruits are always safe bets. Also nuts and seeds can be very good if you can't find cheese or meat substitutes. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I'm new too and I'm having a hard enough time going vegetarian, let alone vegan. I'm in the Midwest and I have a hard time finding vegan products too. Good luck!

I completely know what you mean. I live in midwest and only have like Cub or Rainbow and there are a few options there but it is so hard to find even soy milk or something like that and there for sure is not vegan things. It has been hard as well. I just have to not buy dairy products at all and sometimes there are soy but not that much. It is a very difficult thing out in this area. My friend and I both really want to do vegan full on but it is actually super expensive to be completely vegan because there are not many options out here and if we find something it is way expensive. I just have to stick with fresh fruits and veggies and just the basics since there is really nothing around that sells many vegan type things.
