I am 54 and am pre menopausal do to a hysterectomy 11 years ago, still have ovaries, thankfully. I need nutritional advice from others and Alicia's contacts on what all women should do and not do during this change in our lives. Please comment. Thank you.

I have read some very good things abou Maca Root. It's supposed to regulate your hormones at any stage of life. My mother is taking it, as she is not a candidate for HRT and seems to be doing wonderfully. Good Luck!

I'm so glad someone started this discussion. I have just started to eat vegan in the hopes that it will help with my perimenopausal symtoms. The problems I have been having are weight gain, mood swings, irregular & painful periods. I have been eating a vegan diet for approx 3 weeks - so far, I haven't noticed any improvement at all. How long HONESTLY does it take to start feeling any better?

This is a great thread. The superhero plan is a great idea for anyone wanting to use nutrition to improve their health and reduce the symptoms associated with this time of life very quickly.
Acupuncture can also be a helpful adjunct. Dr. Campbell's ground breaking work "The China Study" described how Asian women have a different experience then Western women due to their diet.

I have been vegetarian for two years. About 80% of my meals are vegan. Unfortunately, it has not really helped my perimenopausal symptoms much. Irregular periods and mood swings are my mainstay. I'm also searching for natural remedies. I don't want to do HRT

Wendy, sorry about your troubles, It is possible to get your cycle back in balance with acupuncture and even some of the traditional Chinese herbs. You may want to try it, it is not risky and would work quickly (if it were to work at all).
The superhero plan could also be helpful as well as the cure all tea.
