I have no problem with the diet EXCEPT for giving up Diet Coke which is like a food group for me! Any suggestions? I know it is horrible for me but I need something to replace my sweet nectar of the gods!!

Hi Denise...I have been drinking diet cola for ever, since I was a child. I was diagnosed with MS. I am pretty sure the Aspartame has something to do with that. Since going Vegan 2 days before Thanksgiving I have not had a single symptom, and have discontinued all medications. Just a little motivator for the giving up of the diet Coke. I have tried carrot juice, yummy. Also, try a piece of fruit and a glass of water, worked for me. The fruit gives you the sweet and the water the fluid. Also, green tea with a little agave nectar is bomb. Hope it helps. Good luck.

try drinking cold tea on ice
also you can try some of those 'natural sodas' -the ones at health food stores that use fruit and cane sugar-its not wonderful for you but i believe aspartame is even worse for you

i like to drink something like Perrier on ice with lime personally it really helped me giving up soda

Hi Denise, I was a soda addict forever - but regular soda was my vice. I don't know which is worse - the high levels of white refined sugar in regular soda or the artificial sweeteners in diets sodas - but they're both SO bad for you! To curb my sweet tooth (since I think my addiction was more about the sugar than the caffeine) I took up fruit - which admittedly has become a bit like crack for me... but I really think that soda is one of the evils of this world.. diet or otherwise, and as Cheryl mentioned definitely contributes or even can even cause a lot of health problems. The tea sweetened with agave is an excellent alternative and I also LOVE carrot juice as a sweet treat. If you need something to give you a boost, I hear coconut water is yummy and full of electrolytes.. especially good after a workout. I successfully gave up soda at least 6 months ago and I don't crave it now at all. I think the more water you drink and the more healthy habits you you take on the easier it becomes to give up the things that aren't good for us and soon your body just learns to naturally reject them. Good luck to you! If I can do it so can you! :) Kelly

Cheryl and Crystal - thanks for the suggestions! Cheryl, so glad to hear you are symptom-free!! You are living proof that our food choices matter. I know the aspartame is ridiculously bad for me but in the middle of a 12 hour night shift, nothing peps me up like a diet coke! I am buying a juicer to make apple/carrot juice along with some other combos. Do you make yours fresh?

Crystal, I really like the idea of Perrier with lime (my coke has the lime - even worse!) I am going to try the agave nectar with tea because a superhero is not supposed to take in too much sugar and I am going for weight loss too!

Thanks again!

Denise- I just have to say. You are not alone!!!! I also have struggled with a love/hate relationship with diet coke. The thing that has helped me most has been the health sodas and sparkling water mixed with pom juice. Its funny because I had little trouble completely walking away from meat, eggs or milk. Cheese a little more, but diet coke.... That has been my everest. Anyway, thought it might help to know you arent alone. Hang in there sista! Like someone mentioned it takes time to get out of a habit. :)

Thanks Whitney! I love the idea of mixing a juice with the sparkling water! Oh, you know exactly how I feel - I am the same way! Meat, dairy - no prob. Diet Coke? Almost unthinkable! Thanks for all the help!

Denise, I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this! I've sometimes gone a week or more without Diet Coke without even realizing it, just because of a lack of money. When I realize how long it's been I congratulate myself and have a reward of LOTS of coke! I'm going to try the suggestions from the other posters here....it'll be hard, though. My favorite part of Diet Coke is the bite from all that carbonation. Mmmm...lol :)
