Nina and Jennifer, i think the ultimate fix during Aunt Flo's visit is a ice cream cookie sandwich made with Uncle Eddie's vegan choc chip oatmeal cookies and Coconut Bliss's dark chocolate ice cream.
A rare treat, but worth the wait!!!

French Momma is speakin' my language. A rare treat for that rare (but intense) craving! Thanks! I have yet to make any desserts from Alicia's book, I am concentrating on the meals first. :)

Here are my "time of the month" comfort foods:

1) mac and "cheese" with spiral macaroni and tofutti sour cream mixed in.

2) whole wheat bread smothered in earth balance and a bit of molasses

3) homemade chocolate cake (very basic recipe that is easy to make)

4) Sweet potato fries

5) warm rice milk

6) garlic bread

Uh, I know that's a lot, but I find that I crave salt, fat and sweet, so that's what I make. The ice cream sandwich idea is lovely :).

sweet potato fries are a staple for me, but when I need an extra...oompf I sprinkle them with chili powder and lime. Extra zip and zest to satisfy the taste buds. (I reallly do think that my taste buds need more extreme flavors on them for about 3 days a month)
am i nutso?

Hi,

I'm Alison, and this is my first day in the website. I too will probably be asking a lot of questions! Please bear with me.

In terms of those times of the month foods, i find anything with some crunch helps; depends how much water I've been consuming but sometimes those organic blue corn salted tortilla chips are the best!

I also find that almond butter on bread, crackers, apples, anything is just as great too!

How I got here:
I am not a flirt yet, but I have actively cut out dairy out of my diet (up and down and up and down) for nearly two years now, I am seriously considering a vegetarian and potentially a vegan life style and am going to start on a crash course to see how it affects me. I have just started training for a half marathon and I need foods that will give me energy so that I can run even on the worst of days. If anyone has some ideas on great food for just this, please let me know.

ALISON There are so many of us that are landing here with great goals, I know it's very important to be surrounded by like-minded people when we want to make a step towards any kind of change, and this one is such a great change! We're all asking questions, we're all answering questions :)I love this place, especially that there's a place for us newbies. As you see above, Alison, we have folks who are struggling and others offering helpful hints. Jennifer came in with a guilty confession and guess what? WE GET IT. French Momma, Evie and I all offered up some suggestions, and so did YOU! We get it. Newbies..This is something that our hearts want and our heads are gradually wrapping around HOWEVER our new choices present a little more work on our part; a little more forethought, stocking ingredients, seeking out eateries, ... all of it is not our normal. We are paving the way to our new normal, one step at a time. We may take a step backwards and falter but overall...if we link arms, the forward momentum is inevitable. I really appreciate this place for the support & information it provides EVERY time I log on.
NATALIE & JENNIFER I started a message thread down in the "exercise" forum that is titled Beachbody Home Workouts Coach. We can talk P90X or if any of you want to chat about ANY of the programs I'll be talking shop down there. :) Alison, if you want to talk about your training for the 1/2 marathon, down there, I would love that too!
Newbies unite! :)

I blogged about it but I thought I'd share here...Tonight, I wanted chocolate (dark chocolate). I wanted my FIX.I saw that my stash (that I had mail-ordered WAY before reading TKD) is vegan! It's VEGAN! I'm sooo glad.
If anyone is interested in dark chocolate (the one I have is 91% cacao but there are ones that are less potent) it's from Theo a company out of Seattle.
Also of note, everything raw has organic raw bars that are also quite good, and taste like chocolate (kinda, you know what I mean). They have several others too.
If you've been training your taste away from chocolate because of the dairy and if you're used to cacao - then you'll probably like these.
okie dokie - see you later!
Enjoy the day!!

I'm pretty jazzed. Alicia's been on The View, The Oprah Winfrey TV Show & Dr. Oz's radio show this week. I'm sure we'll have more people joining us here after reading the book and hearing about the website!
exciting!! smiley-laughing.gif

Just thinking: I've been sporadically excited and then forget about vegan cooking for ...2 years or so and I think it speaks to Alicia's great approach to it that has made me really dig into the dusty collection of vegan cookbooks I have on my shelf. I think seeing Food, Inc and then reading Alicia's book in the same week really did something to flip the switch. I'd already known the background info..(I'm familiar with Ornish, Barnard, The China Study, etc) but something only just recently has flipped the switch. I'm so thankful to whatever it was but I know that THIS community has had a lot to do with it.
so happy smiley-laughing.gif
