struggling during that time of the month...

Hey everyone...I've been a vegan for 2 months now and it's going great except around that time of the month. I work out a lot and I've noticed that during my period I'm losing a ton of energy and apparently the food I'm eating is not helping me replenish the iron and other things I'm losing during my period. When I dont' work out I don't notice much of a difference in energy during my period. Here is an example of what I eat daily and I like routine and I'm a lazy cooker! I also drink a lot of green tea...
Breakfast-reg. oatmeal with dates, blackberries, flax seed, wheat germ and agave nectar
Snack-apple and almonds
Lunch-spinach, quinoa, carrots, cucumbers, sprouts, evoo
Snack-fruit and crackers
Pre-workout-soup or oatmeal
Dinner-eziekiel bread, hummus, spinach, quinoa sandwich (my own recipe) or soup
I know there is not much variety but I'm happy with what I eat. Sometimes I eat pasta but I really do not like processed stuff and I'm not a fan of tofu. Any suggestions for me to keep my energy going?
Thanks!
Your meals sound great, but if I were eating the same things I would be feeling weak too! You need some protein!! Try adding beans: kidney, navy, garbanzo, black, white, green, black-eyed-peas, etc. Add some nuts to your oatmeal, it'll taste so great! Lentils are amazing too. Good luck!

The breads and the carbs or banana need to be eaten before your workout for increased energy and stamana. And after your workout loadup on the proteins like beans to regenerate your muscles. What your eating is good you just have to cater for food around your workouts so u don't get weak.

This is a great question! I have not experienced this, but personally, I suggest trying out Vega shakes. I promise I do not work for this company and am in no pay being paid to promote them. I have just used this product and absolutely love it. The jugs are a bit expensive, but you can shop around for cheap prices, including Amazon. The Vega shakes used to be 2 scoops to be mixed with your liquid of choice or into a smoothie (or even food, like pancakes). These two scoops covered you for the day in terms of any and all nutrients you need. I guess a lot of people found it too harsh, though, so they introduced Vega One, which is just 1 scoop and, accordingly, half of the nutrients you need in a day. Honestly, this is still more than the average person gets in their diets every day!
Perhaps this would be something that you can do during that one week that is extra difficult for you. I always make my shake in the morning with some non-dairy milk and mixed berries. A tasty smoothie! They also have a pre-workout shake, which I have not tried, as well as a recovery shake, which I do like, as well. Overall, it's just a really great addition to your diet on days where you feel like you won't be able to get it on the nutrients.
As Alexia mentioned, definitely include some protein. And definitely add in some more leafy greens because they're great with iron.
I find that I simply need more calories around that time of month (as well as lots of calcium). I like smoothies made with frozen blueberries, sliced peaches, bananas and soy &/or almond milk. I also snack on extra nuts, fresh raspberries, and dark chocolate.
You may simply be getting too few calories. More carbs might help, maybe some rice or potatoes (or sweet potatoes if you avoid nightshades). I would definitely add in some beans for protein as well. Dark chocolate always makes me feel better around that time of the month. I like the quinoa chocolate bar by alter eco and there are a lot of other vegan dark chocolates available as well. If you're concerned, you may want to consider speaking with a veggie-friendly nutritionist or a macrobiotics counselor. I'm guessing a few small adjustments to your diet would probably help you fix your energy.
