Does anyone have any extremely yummy recipes for tempeh? I'm not a huge fan of it except when I make it into tempeh bacon and eat it in a sandwich...but I'm also not that great at cooking it. Oh, and I've mixed it with mayo, veggies and spices and made a salad thing for sandwiches, but I'd like something that doesn't come between two slices of bread. Thanks for the help guys!

In the book Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra, there is a delicious recipe called Tempeh Sausage Pastry Puffs. I've made them twice and they are sooo good! I even had one of my non-vegan friends try one and he could not believe it was not sausage!

Thank you for these ideas!!! My husband and I have tried tempeh on two different occasions and we thought it was absolutely disgusting. Maybe we'll give one of the recipes you suggest a whirl!

Thank you so much! I thought I was doomed not to like tempeh, but the recipes look great! Also, I think I can handle it better when it's crumbled in something like the "crab" cakes or potato cakes. Awesome blog Jessy! It's great that you can find locally made tempeh--none of that here. Although, I do have a book called wild fermentation that tells you how to make tempeh from scratch, but it is an intense and time-consuming process, so I haven't done it yet, especially not before having found a recipe I like! Thanks again!

Hi Evie,
Jessy is right about steaming it first- that's a must. My husband and I just made the best recipe for Tempeh Shamaras from "The Vegan Table" cookbook. It's so good that we plan to make it for friends very soon. I have also pan fried Tempeh and served it with some vegan garlic aioli and it was very tasty. From what I have seen, there are different kinds of Tempeh (flax, whole grain, etc.), so maybe try a different kind. I buy an organic Tempeh from Trader Joes and I like it a lot. Good luck!

I would love to know other people's favorite ways to make tempeh. It's taken me awhile to warm up to it, but now that I have a few yummy recipes I'm actually in love w/it. Anyway, please post some of your crowd-pleasing tempeh recipes. Here's mine:

I put 1-2 tablespoons of miso in a small ceramic dish add just enough hot water to cover tempeh, stir until mixed then add pack of tempeh sliced lengthways, usually 7-8 slices, bake on 350 until water has evaporated then heat in skillet over medium with a little oil until brown on both sides. Flavor is intense and delicious hot or cold. Sometimes for a change I add ginger but is great with must miso. Make at least once a week when have oven on for other things just to have ready for quick meal later.

Try this recipe out: http://www.artandlemons.com/2011/04/black-pepper-tempeh.html

It comes from the wonderful cookbook Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson, and it's absolutely delicious!
