I watched Oprah the other day and saw Alicia speaking about the vegan diet so I had to go out and buy the book. It's fascinating and I can't put it down! I mentioned the vegan way of life to my 14 yr. old son who is a health nut, plays soccer 7 days a week and is in the greatest shape and he said, "Mom, I'm not giving up meat!". A short while later I asked him to read a few paragraphs from Alicia's book and he has now sworn off meat and dairy and can't believe how animals are treated in order to be placed on our dinner plates! He was appalled when he read about how the cows have their flesh ripped from their bones when they aren't even stunned and was horrified at what is in the milk we drink. Goodbye bad health and thank you Alicia!!

It's wonderful that you and your son are going on this journey together!

Might I recommend a very good film--Food, Inc--if your son needs a little reminder of the ills of the modern food industry. It's not as jarring as some of the more hardcore vegan films (I'm looking at you, Earthlings) but it points out the benefits of a wholesome, whole foods based diet and the ills of an industrial diet in a very sensitive way. Food Inc is available for streaming on Netflix if you have it.

Great to hear because myself and my 14 yr. old daughter have started about 10 days ago and she is loving it. She is baking and shopping with me. It is so fun to have something to do together, especially when they are teens. Its especially great to watch her teach our 6 and 7 yr old about different foods. This has been so great for our FAMILY. Not just for our health and planet, but our whole family :)

Yes I do want to see Food, Inc. as it was discussed on the Oprah show. I will get it when I am able to get to the store. No Netflix here.

Debra, that's great to hear that you are also doing it with your daughter. I can't wait to go shopping and see what's available. My son and I were looking through the recipes in the book and we couldn't believe how many foods are out there that we just hadn't heard of! It goes to show how the corporate giants will teach us so much about the "junk" they want us to buy and nothing about the good, healthy stuff.
