Hello from Pennsylvania! I have dabbled in vegetarianism for about 20 years, but made the decision to go 100% vegetarian within the past few months. I'm not all Vegan "yet", but I'm working my way toward that goal. I've been lurking on the forum and website a bit today and I love the fact this seems to be such a "positive" place. I'm actually excited about learning as much as I can about the Vegan lifestyle and would like to start a Vegan group here in my city eventually. I live in a meat and potatoes industry and would love to connect with other Vegans out there as there is not much support here within my own community. I just ordered Alicia's book from Amazon.com and can't wait to get my hands on it! I plan to try out all her recipes as I love to cook good food. If anyone lives in the NW PA area and would like to connect with me, please feel free to contact me.

Fondly, Jenny

Jenny:

What part of Pennsylvania are you from? I live in the Downingtown area and have found some pretty good places to buy vegan and a few places to eat out vegan.

Hi - i just joined today and am in the Allentown area. I've decided to make some changes in my life, starting with diet. I'm always tired, i have stomach issues, never feel good and with the extra threat of menopause approaching, i want to be more healthy and in control of my body. I've decided to start slow, cutting out red meat first, and eating much more vegetables and fruit. My eating habits are atrocious and i'm about 20 lbs over what i should be. I'm kind of scared but excited...

P.S. I meant to ask in my previous post - I'm a little concerned with the price of food in this type of diet. I've been told that it can be very expensive to buy whole foods and organic veggies, chicken, etc. Has anyone found this to be true?

Hi all! My name is Mandie and I live about 1 hour west of Detroit. I'm actually a vet student at MSU with about 1 1/2 years left. I have been a vegetarian for about 10 years now and read Alicia's book over my Christmas break. Since then I have begun cutting way back on my dairy and almost eliminated eggs completely (every once in a while I eat baked goods that I'm sure they're in). I'm really hoping that making this transition can help me to live a fuller and healthier life and I look forward to having the oppportunity to share it with others.smiley-smile.gif

Hello! My name is Michelle and I live in Farmington Hills, MI (suburbs of Detroit). I am a recent college grad and have been a vegetraian for about a year now, but couldn't really bring myslef to eat meat on a reqular basis even before I went completely vegetarian. I have been thinking about/researching the vegan lifestyle for quite some time now, and I have decided to go all in. Reading The Kind Diet has truly inspiried me and I am excited to begin my new journey! I just joined The Kind LIfe today so I would appreciate any suggestions on resturants in the Metro Detroit area and any other tips people can give me! I see there a a few other people from Detroit that have recently joined as well and I would love to talk with you and share stories and ideas!

Was up late last night reading Alicia's book. I use to be a vegan years and I mean years ago, for personal reasons stopped. Was awakened by watching Oprah first and than reading her book was something else. Boy it brought it all home. Now I am in my 50s and am nauseated when I think of meat.
I am anxious about getting this started. I just hope hope at my age I can do this, my daughter is joining me on our new life.
Thank you Alicia.

Hey there! i just joined about 3 weeks ago. Like you, Jenny, im "flirting" with Veganism, but have been 100% veggie for 3 weeks now. i cant believe what a difference i feel, even while eating some dairy and eggs. and not just physically better, which i TOTALLY do, but emotionally. like a hiuuuuuge weight has been lifted off my chest by not eating my animal friends (which is why i made this switch)

also i should add that i've been TOTALLY stressed out about going out to dinner with my new hubby (married in october!) We usually go out once a week and have had other engagements since i started this, so tonight will be our first "go". he's very supportive of me but not changing his lifestyle. so ive been looking online at all of our favorites, and felling TOTALLY discouraged. like, almost gave up a few times discouraged. but then yesterday i wat at work and thought i would look at the Chilis menu one more time since i saw something about a veggie burger. then at the bottom of the screen i noticed a little box that said "click here for the vegetarian menu PDF" HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!! its a whole page!!!!! basically they will make anything there for you with a couple of meat substitutions (like a black bean patty... yum) they say not to get anything fried because its still cooked in the same oil as the meat. but there are still tons of options!!!!! they even put a D next to things with dairy and E next to things with eggs so if you're vegan you know what to avoid. there is a lot with D's and E's, dont get me wrong, but i think it could be good for a flirter like me!! im planning on getting the "oldtimer" burger with a black bean patty, on a whole wheat bun, with mushrooms and onions and maybe one of the other toppings. not sure what to get for a side yet. yay!!!!!!!!!!!!
