Exciting, shocking news; I have to share!!!

I started out on my vegan journey very, very alone. I had initially heard about veganism through a friend, the only vegan I knew. We lost touch over the next year before I became a vegan myself, so my only support was here. I did it sort of as an experiment, to see whether I would really feel as great as the books said I would.
Well I tried, and I feel amazing. Not only do I feel better than I ever have, but I've stopped taking my asthma and allergy medicines, finding with great pleasure that I don't need them anymore. My mood swings and depressed feelings that I struggled with have mostly disappeared.
Now finally to the exciting shocking stuff. My younger brother, who has been accepting of but not enthusiastic about my lifestyle change, sent me a text today, out of the blue, that said, "I'm thinking about going vegan." What!? I was so happy and so surprised! Now he wants me to teach him about it and help him get started. I'm am so giddy about having someone else on this journey with me, and in my own house!
And even more good news.. I got back in touch with my friend to tell her that I've gone vegan and to thank her for planting the seed in my mind. This weekend I am going to her house and bringing my brother, and she is inviting some of her friends for a vegan potluck! I think it will be a great way to introduce my brother to the lifestyle, because everything she has cooked for me in the past was AMAZING.
And, maybe good things do come in threes, because I was visiting my cousin last week and saw that my aunt was reading Skinny Bitch. I told her that I was a new vegan and loving it, and I lent her TKD, and she is considering going vegan, too!
This is turning into quite the exciting ride. Who knew that a more kind diet could change my life so quickly, and in such wonderful ways :)
That's so awesome! Great job! Yesterday, an acquaintance of mine said that he wants to start eating vegetarian but feels overwhelmed and confused as to how because he lifts a lot of weights and is very active. However, he and I are going to the health food store tomorrow, and I'm going to "teach" him about the various vegan options he can try. Also, my friends are very interested in having me cook for them, so we are all going to pitch in on the grocery bill and have a vegan feast! A lot of people I know are becoming more curious about this lifestyle. It's great! Go you for leading by example and sparking curiosity amongst loved ones!
That's so cool, Evie! Aren't you so psyched about having good vegan food with some open-minded people? I know I am :) I'm loving that some people are actually just curious and asking me questions about how I came to this and veganism in general, rather than doing the eye-roll, which was more what I expected in my rural setting. Very refreshing.
That is excellent, Vanessa! I, too, started this journey alone, knowing no other vegan. My friends were not supportive to start with, but we get together every Friday and last week my friend who hosted made vegan soup, vegan cake and had vegan snacks for me. It really touched me! Her husband even loved the soup! It feels great to be validated.
Today I hosted and had all vegan food and everyone enjoyed it all!
That's awesome! I started this very much on my own in october, and now my best friend has read TKD and been eating vegan for the past 3 weeks. We've been working out our weekly menus together to talk about the recipes. I have also convinced a few other friends to see food inc. The other day when alicia was on oprah I posted it on my facebook page as my status and ALOT of my friends tivoed oprah and were really interested! I'm so excited that this is getting out into the mainstream.
Wow... I love this site. Vanessa - your story is so inspiring! I am just starting out as well - 2 weeks! And I feel good! I definitely need to get some recipes in order, since I find being prepared for meals makes this a lot easier, but I wish I had some vegan friends too! lol... My bf learned a few vegan recipes this week though, to cook for me for Valentine's Day. I thought that was sweet! Thanks for sharing your story!
