I have been all over looking for Mochi (A rice block brown or white) used in numerious recipies in Alicias book. I found Mochi with different fillings in the cookie isle at T&T asian market in Franklin Mall (Pacific Place) NE Calgary. Nothing at the health food shops or Superstore / Safeway. Planet Organic said they can order me a case if I wanted. A case is too much for the 2 of us. Anyone have any ideas? I need Mochi plain with no fillings in a block form, I believe, is what wikipedia said.
We've had the Cheesy, Oozy Guacamole Bean Dip (Very Good. Vegan chedar cheese dosent melt like animal fat cheese but tastes the same.)
Alicias magical healing soup was very good as well. I like miso and shoyu but still cannot find Mochi so couldnt add that to the soup but still delicious. And last night we had the pecan crusted seitan with rustic pasta. Both very good and really could replace a Thanks Giving Turkey or for Christmas Dinner. Next time we will cut the seitans thinner and my wife dosent like onions so all recipies will have to do without the onions or she wont like them as much. All very wonderful food. The initial grocert bill was pretty heafty but now we have most ingerdients so now we just have to continue buying the produce as we run out so our grocery bill should get cheaper. Finding where the cheaper organic food is sold (ie Superstore/Walmart) is also a learning experience. 9 days being vegan. Today my work brought in 20 pizzas for appreciation to volunteers. Ohh soo tempting but I walked out and ate what I brought for lunch (rustic pasta / V8) and didn't feel like passing out afterwords.
I found Mochi at Community Health Foods in the freeser section. Many different kinds if this helps anyone. Also many other types of hard to find japanese foods there as well. 1304 10 ave SW or 2 other locations located on their web site
Thanks for your information - I haven't been able to find Mochi but I wonder if Whole Foods carries it. I have to drive out of town to get to a Whole Foods.
