Question about whole grains

So, exactly what amount of whole grains is a serving? Does it vary by type? I'm mainly wondering about brown rice and quinoa and steel-cut oats. The packaging tells me what a serving is pre-cooking and I'm assuming it's different after cooking because 1/4 cup of quinoa seems too small an amount to be a serving after it's cooked. I dunno...maybe it actually is a serving and I've stumbled onto the reason why I haven't lost weight. LOL

Also, are all varieties of quinoa "whole grain?"

Yeah, I know, more than one question. ;-))

Yeah, that's my philosophy too. Unfortunately, I have about 20 pounds that have to go and I haven't had much luck yet. So, just thought I'd ask.

i just re read your question and i get it now, yeah 1/4 c of quinoa is the uncooked amount. cause grains swell up and absorb water when their cooked. its the same as pasta and rice. but i dont know how much in cooked volume a serving is. so far i have seen black and white coloured quinoa. im pretty sure its wholegrain.the only non wholegrain grains i know of are white rice and wheat(white flour, etc) quinoa is pretty good and 1/4 if definitely way too small a serving. id your trying to lose weight... fill up on fruits and veggies and wholegrains and legumes, as they have lots of fibre and will make you feel full, and stay away from having too many high calorie foods for a bit. (nuts and avocados, etc) you need to have some of these in your diet, just don't overdo them, as the book says

Only on day three and I am very bloated!! Anyone experience bloating in the beginning? Am guessing that it is a result of all the grains, when will it pass?

that should pass eventually, couple months tops? i think i experienced something similar when i frist went vegan but it was a while back now and i don't rember very well. if you don't usually eat alot of grains then your body will just be getting used to it. if it gets really bad maybe cut the amount of food your eating down... you could just be eating too much food. that happens to me sometime when i have too much for dinner lol

Thanks Melody! My shops have a red quinoa and a white quinoa and I wasn't sure if the white was the quinoa equivalent of white rice.

What's so odd is that I think I'm avoiding the high calorie foods but there must be something I'm missing because the weight simply will not budge and it's been 4 months! It's not like i'm expecting miracles in the first week or anything.

Stacy, I didn't get bloated I don't think but I know that is something many people experience in the beginning. Hopefully it'll pass soon!
