Today is my 2nd day as a vegetarian. I had been contemplating making the change for a while now. In the last 6 weeks I've read several books and watched some documentaries that motivated me to finally do it. I plan on going vegan in the next month or so, as soon as all of my non-vegan groceries are gone. I'd also like to eventually move to a mostly local, natural diet. I'm definitely taking baby steps. I was a fast food junkie, eating out on average 1-2 times per day. I'm diabetic, and as such, a majority of my groceries have some kind of artificial sweeteners. I'd eventually like to phase those out as well. I hope that changing to this lifestyle will help my weight and overall health.
I'm curious about advice, tips, etc that other veggies/vegans might have for surviving in a decidedly un-veggie friendly area. I'm in Kansas, and though there are a few small, locally owned natural food stores, other resources are lacking (no Whole Foods!). The Farmers Market only runs May-October, as does the one CSA option.
Thanks for any ideas/encouragement you may have. I hope to contribute to the community and learn as much as I can!
Hi Amanda! This is my day 2 as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's just getting started. I'm also taking baby steps. This week my goal is to be a vegetarian and eventually become vegan. I live in Texas and there's no Whole Food's in my area either. I went grocery shopping at Wal-Mart yesterday and immediately realized how scarce my options were. A suggestion for you is to go to drug stores like CVS. There could be vegan dairy items that you may not be able to find at a regular grocery store. I hope we keep in touch as we continue our journey to a healthy life. I know we can do it. Have a great day!
