Japan!!

I am headed to Japan in April, long flight for one... and I'm a bit overwhelmed. The idea of Not speaking or reading the language scares me. I will be staying with a friend who is stationed over there. Any Ideas on how to shop, I should be able to cook every now and again, and where to eat. We will be traveling up and down the continent! Thanks!!!
