i've been through this - it takes two weeks and it's horrible but you'll feel so good and get no cravings once you're through it!make sure you eat lots of whole grains and veggies. Keep strong, it's only 2 weeks! Also use brown rice syrup, you can still make things or use it in things to get a sweetness but because it's a grain-sweetner it's not addictive, wont make you crave more sugar. Also be careful of your salt intake , salt makes you more likely to binge/crave sugary foods.
you can do it!

I recently heard bad things about agave syrup. The research suggested it is a lot like high fructose corn syrup. I tend to not be convinced with one study, but caution may be warranted.

My "In Case of Sugar Emergency" solution is fresh vegetable juice---the greener the better. Though, I usually add half a green apple (less sugary than the red) to cut the green flavor down a bit. Extra bonus points: the juice is energizing, filling, plus I actually feel healthy and clean when I drink it.

Shaynie, like you I too have crazy sugar cravings, especially since going vegan. I am also graving more salt than usual. Has anyone else experienced this?

mary-ann, my sugar cravings have exploded since going vegan as well! i think it's my body clinging to the last bit of any artificially created elevated serotonin levels it can. i find that getting in a hard workout really helps -- not just because it's "healthy" but because of those endorphins. oh, and the umeboshi plums really do help, as well.

Before I was vegan I kicked sugar for 8 months. When I was in the hospital they fed me unhealthy foods- yes, it's true. they had a dessert with lunch and dinner. I was weak- BAM- back on sugar. One of my friends is going on a sugar fast during lent. I don't celebrate lent but I am joining her on the sugar fast. It's always better to have someone to commiserate with!

Thanks for the support Helly!!!! It's been a rough little ride, between Valentine's and friends' birthdays. But 2 weeks, I'll get through it and let you know how it goes!! :) :) :)
And Justin, I've recently heard that about agave syrup too! If there's one thing that irks me about as much as refined sugar, it's HFcorn syrup.....good to keep an eye on new research on agave as it comes out, we'll see what happens.....

Sara, that does sound like great idea! I'm finding that as long as I keep up a steady intake of chlorophyll throughout the day, not only do I feel amaaazing, but my sugar cravings go way down too!
Mary-Ann, I feel like I may have gone through that too. It seems like before I went completely vegan and cutting out most processed stuff, my sugar and salt intake was really high, so maybe it's just my body feeling like it still wants that? Still not sure, but let me know how it goes for you!!!!

The information on sugar replacements is helpful! One big question: What's the ratio? If my recipe calls for one cup of sugar, what do I put in?
