Substitute for Maple Sugar?

I am planning to make the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups tomorrow and I can't find Maple Sugar anywhere! The recipe does say "or other granulated sweetener" but what are some other alternatives to sugar? I did find brown rice syrup...would that work?
i don't think they will workout...too much liquid. i would try turbinado sugar.
Maybe brown sugar? We often use it to give a maple flavor to a lot of dessert in Quebec. I think we can find some unprocessed but I'm not sure.
On the back of the brown rice syrup that I use it says that at any time when substituting brown rice syrup in a recipe for another sugar, to use 1 and a 1/4cup brown rice syrup for 1 cup of sugar and to also use 1/4 cup less of a liquid that's needed in the recipe.
Since you're making the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups just don't use the 1/4 cup soy/ rice/ or nut milk Alicia's recipe calls for since you're using brown rice syrup this time.
As far as how much brown rice syrup to use I'm no math whiz so I asked my hubby and I think he's right. Measure a 1/4 cup of the brown rice syrup PLUS HALF of a 1/4 cup so basically it all comes out to about 1/3 cup total that you can use for this particular recipe using brown rice syrup. I hope I wasn't too confusing.
Can you let me know how this worked out if you do decide to do it this way because I too bought a jar of brown rice syrup to make the other dessert, the Crispy Peanut Butter Treats, and will just use the same jar if it turns out well for you. Thank you

I made them with brown sugar (a little more processed than I would have liked but I had some on hand) and they are AMAZING!!!! My roommate (who is a non-vegan) loved them as well...I am trying to prove to all of my skeptic friends that vegan food is delicious! Anyway, thanks all for your suggestions!
Kitty-I realized as I was making them that the brown rice syrup definitely would not have worked...the peanut butter mixture is already a little liquidy so I think a granulated sweetener is a must. Also the sugar is needed for the PB mixture and the nut milk is for the chocolate topping so you couldn't really omit the milk to compensate for the liquid. But thanks to you and your hubby for trying to do the math for me!
I made them last night and didnt have maple sugar, I used about a tablespoon, or a tad more, of maple syrup and they came out yummy!!!! Even my 13 yr old stepson who is a meat eater loved them! I followed everything else the recipe called for, except for using smooth pb instead of chunky, thats all I had. Hope this helps!
Thank you Lauren for writing me back about this
