So... I know that buying leather wouldn't be the most Vegan thing to do... but what if I purchase leather at a thrift store? Is there a reason not to do that? Or silk even, if it's already been recycled and purchased used?

I buy them from thrift stores but I NEVER buy them new. i feel like the animal died we can't change that now. We didn't support the industry so i do buy used.

I think that if you are against leather then you should not wear it so that you do not portray the image that you agree with it--whether it is old or new. I feel the same way about faux fur--if it looks real you are sending the message that you agree with fun in my mind.

Personally, I would wear leather that's used or that I bought prior to becoming vegan. I also have a rabbit-fur coat (I know, I know) from the 80s that I inherited from my aunt by way of my mom. It's so gorgeeeous and warm. I don't really wear it but I still keep it because it makes me feel glamourous every once in a while... but I would never buy something like that new.

I don't really think wearing, say, a pair of leather shoes "promotes" the image of being an animal hater or anything like that. I think that it's just as rude to judge someone and say "Oh, you're a VEGAN?" as it is to say "Oh, you wear LEATHER?"

Yeah - it's a hard debate in my head. On one end I understand the philosophy behind it, but if I'm buying it used I'm just continuing to recycle... but by wearing it I'm saying 'It's ok to skin animals for use in fashion'.
I've consistantly purchased a pair of used leather boots (Doc's or Gripfast or something) that last me 3-5 years... Got at least 2 years left on my current ones... guess I have some time to figure it out :)

know that look very good, but never buy a jacket, is against everything I do for animals, there are a PETA video about the inhumane treatment of helpless animals that made me hate the leather producers.
Hopefully soon learn that this is not right ..

Here's the reason I buy cloth purses and vegan shoes:

Hope I didn't traumatize you. That video is very hard to watch but it pretty much takes away the desire to buy leather.

My view on leather is that I will wear anything that I owned before going vegan, as it is no better for the environment for me to throw away leather goods that are in perfectly good shape and fill the landfills. However, I won't buy any new leather products. I would probably buy leather in thrift shops though; although in my experience, people always are skeptical when they see me wearing any leather pieces.
