Hey I've been an on again off again yoga follower for a couple years now, but I don't know if it's because I don't seem to follow it for more then a week before getting bored or if I'm doing it wrong or what. I mean I love Yoga, and stretching, I'm really flexible so the poses come pretty easy but I don't have the muscle built up to move up to more advanced poses but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me as far as sticking to it, and feeling like I actually got a work out after I do it for an hour. I mean I don't feel it at all, I don't know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for your help!
Olivia, you're not doing anything wrong. There are so many different styles of yoga and some are definitely "easier" than others. I practice Native and Ashtanga styles of yoga which are fast paced, done in a hot room, and build total body strength. Power yoga studios have been popping up all over the place recently which offer great workouts. I've become attached to the traditional styles however. You'll find that making a dedication to a practice - whichever one you choose - will produce the best results. To move into more advanced yoga poses, I got involved with a local yoga studio, became friendly with the owner, and then challenged myself with the more difficult classes and let them know ahead of time that I was "new" and needed some guidance. Practicing at least 3 times a week helps too! If you want to squeeze in a workout at home, Dave Farmar has great, challenging power yoga podcasts you can download for free on itunes.
I hope something in my rambling helps! Namaste :)
Olivia, I have the same problem. You are not alone on this. I feel so bad about it, too. All my friends think I must be super flexible by now... but I can't even touch my toes. To make things worse, I've been dealing with a sinus infection thing since October... not fun. I do have a few dvds, and my faves always include Rodney Yee. I don't know why, something about his voice maybe. Anyway, I bought one of his DVDs called "Yoga Burn" and when they say burn, they mean it. I also have the AM & PM dvd. Both of these are by Gaiam. I'm not sure what style he uses, though... Oh! You can always check your library to see if they have the dvds, and if you decide you like them you can buy them... I just remembered that. Never hurts to ask... Good luck, Olivia... and if you want to help each other with sticking with it feel free to message me anytime!
Cool! Thanks so much for your help guys!
