Hello -
I am new to the vegan diet and so far I am LOVING it! I had a question regarding the umeboshi plums. I purchased my first pack today and tried one. Couldn't believe how much I like them! However, they seem like an item that should be refrigerated after opening. The package does not say to do this so I just wanted to be sure. Does anyone refrigerate them after opening them?
Thanks!
Sharon
HI I'm new to where did you buy the umeboshi plums??? One thing that scares me is all the foreign foods, YIKES but so far I am loving how I feel! trying for the superhero diet.
I've kept mine in the refrigerator after I opened the package. I have about 4 plums left since I bought it and it's been 5 weeks since I started the TKD. I also refrigerate the ume paste.
Thanks so much Run4Fun - it's odd, I couldn't find anything saying to regrigerate but they just seem like a product that should be refrigerated!!
Margo - I got mine at a Natural Health Food Store (Bunn's) but I'm sure that Whole Foods would carry them. Bunn's is a local spot whereas Whole Foods are all over the place. Trader Joe's might have them as well but I'd call & check first.
What isle do these magical plums live on?
Whole food does carry the whole plums and the paste. Pricey but they're there!
Has anyone bought them online from an asian food store? if so, please share where!
The plums I bought state on the package they should be refrigerated, so your instincts were right.
I have seen them in several places here (Phoenix, AZ). Whole Foods, Sunflower Market (natural food store), and Lee Lee Market (Asian market). The cheapest - by far - were at the Asian market. I got a small tub of them for less than $3. The same amount of product at Sunflower was $14....I almost fell over when I compared the pricing.
Just be sure that the only ingredients are plums, salt, beefsteak leaves, and water. The beefsteak leaves are how the plums are naturally colored pink/red. Some brands use food coloring or other artificial means and you want to avoid those products.
The brand name of the plums I bought at the Asian market is Miyako brand - they originated from the Mutual Trading Co. in Los Angeles. Very yummy and economical!
As a side note, I was also able to locate Lotus Root at the Asian market to make the "Maple-Roasted Lotus Root, Sunchokes, and Leeks" recipe on page 269 of Alicia's book. Phenomenal - my (non-vegan) husband is still requesting a repeat of this one...it was super delish!
I just read this post and I am so jealous you found Lotus Root. I was out today trying to track that down and I can't seem to find them anywhere. I was trying to get Lotus Root for the tea recipe in Alicia's book. I'm going to try again tomorrow to find it. I have Eden umeboshi plums. There are excellent in quality but very pricey! However, they are worth it!
