People with PCOS almost always have associated insulin resistance as well. It's just par for the course. Insulin resistance is like diabetes' younger cousin and is responsible for not only weight gain, but also the difficulty in losing extra weight.
So, PCOS gals should try to eat like a diabetic would eat, as much as possible. This means avoiding all sugar as much as you reasonably can. And if you must indulge (and it's okay from time to time, don't stress!), just try to curb your insulin response by "buffering" it with a little fat and protein beforehand.
Also, remember that it's not just sugar that causes insulin to spike. Refined flours, white bread, etc. do the exact same thing.
So bottom line, a diet filled with lots of veggies, beans, fresh fruit, whole grains, healthy fats - unprocessed, unrefined whole foods (in other words, The Superhero Diet!) is AWESOME for PCOS!
I hope I have been helpful. Please let me know if anyone needs further clarification or more info.

Oh and I almost forgot!!!
CINNAMON!!!
They have recently proven that cinnamon helps to manage blood sugar levels so I sprinkle it on anything and everything I can. Oatmeal, fruit, toast, soygurt, pancakes, cereal, brown rice, ANYTHING! (It helps that I LOVE cinnamon)
Check out this article http://www.naturalnews.com/025590_cinnamon_blood_sugar.htmlor any of the articles that come up if you search the benefits of cinnamon on blood sugar.
It's like nature's medicine :)

Thanks Hilary! I'm so glad to hear you have a daughter-congratulations! Honestly, I can deal with the weight issues, but I don't think I could deal with infertility. I've always felt that I was meant to be a mom and I'm hoping that this diet, along with some seriously positive thinking I'll be as lucky as you!
And thank you for the sugar advice. I feel like it's something I've always known that I needed to stay away from, but it's going to be a battle for sure! Thank you for all the answers!

I was recently diagnosed with pcos and hypo thyroid. Besides having cysts on my ovaries, the other symptoms haven't shown up untill about a year ago. The cystic acne, weight gain, etc... it's very frustrating. The thing that is bothering me is that i became vegetarian a little over 2 years ago. I'm worried becoming vegetarian triggered my pcos. Anyways, I have been reading a lot about low carb diet. I want to maintain my vegetarian diet, looking for help and suggestions as to what kinds of foods to avoid. I haven't been eating soy or most dairy. I occasionally have an egg.

I am so frustrated because, (and i apologize for sound vain) but i used to have a nice figure, curvy but a good weight for my height and very clear skin. I've gained 10 pounds this past year. I've lost a lot of my confidence, and i know my long time boyfriend loves me but he can clearly see i'm not the same person he fell in love with. The weight gain and the acne are disheartening.

At first i was feeling very sorry for myself and defeated, (pathetic, i know) but now i realize for life's challenges you must fight. So i plan on concuring the pcos and thyroid with a modified diet and lots of exercise. What suggestions do you guys have?

- One more thought/question. I've never been on birth control, and i had planned on keeping it that way but the gyno suggested that i do go on it to control the hormones. A tricylo kind ?(i can't remember the name) Is going on BC going tomake me gain more weight? Any other suggestions to alternative for BC?

I'm sorry for rambling, thank you in advance for an advice/suggestions!

I too have PCOS but unfortunately I don't have medical insurance. My job doesnt offer benefits and my husbands is too expensive. Almost 3 years ago I went from a size 20 to 16 but thats it I haven't lost anything else since. I need help ladies, I'm not a vegetarian or vegan and I think I'd have a hard time changing over. What are great ways for me to start?
