hypothyroidism, can I ever give up my meds?

I was a vegetarian for 9 years and am now trying out veganism. I hear so many people say they are now living "medicine free". I don't WANT the drugs, believe me! But I'd love to hear from anyone who has Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and their stories. It makes it very difficult to lose weight and once you're on the medication, you're told you're on it for life.

Anyone able to successfully go off their Synthroid? Thanks!
