If we are avoiding tropical fruits DOES that include coconut or coconut oil? Nuts are technically a fruit.

I think you are really only supposed to consume it if you are living in a tropical or semi-tropical climate.

In other macrobiotic books, it says that coconut oil should be avoided, but I'd agree with crystal - maybe just once in a while and I'd make sure it was organic and unprocessed (if using coconut flakes and such)

If I might quote from a source I consider reliable, Dr Ray Peat (please see this and other articles on his web site: "www.raypeat.com". The following quote is from http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/unsaturated-oils.shtml)

"Q. What oils are safe?

Coconut and olive oil are the only vegetable oils that are really safe, . . . . Coconut oil is unique in its ability to prevent weight-gain or cure obesity, by stimulating metabolism. It is quickly metabolized, and functions in some ways as an antioxidant. Olive oil, though it is somewhat fattening, is less fattening than corn or soy oil, and contains an antioxidant which makes it protective against heart disease and cancer."

I'd be interested in reading your thoughts concerning this quote. Thank you. You should know that Professor Peat is not a vegan and doesn't pretend to be one.

I guess the answer to the question bepends on how superhero (macrobiotics) you want to be? In macrobiotic it is said that coconutoil should be used very little, to my knowledge outside macrobiotics I read again andagain that it is one of the best oils to use for all kinds of things especially frying (cooking).

As to coconutproducts as icecreams and such, these are processed foods and to my opinion and what i learn here and elsewehere should be considered a treat if you're a vegan and are no-no's if you're superhero..

I guess coconutmilk if processed its the same story if its fresh also not too much

But ofcourse if you want to eat these products and use them is up to you.

I am moving slowly slowly towards superhero but i will use my coconutoil at least untill it s finished, and still have tomotoes, paprika's and some vegetables that are not "superhero" because I like them (i will use them less though) and untill i feel in my body that I really shouldn't or untill I am convinced it is really better to give them up.....

My motto is always inform yourself as best you can and than make your own discision!
