Natural Toothpaste??

Wow Juxta, thanks for the heads up re: Tom's. It was always my favorite. Last time I went to the dentist I was asking about whiteners. She and her assistant both said for my age ( 46 at the time ) that I had very white teeth. ( Not to mention I used to smoke, drink red wine and coffee!!). I told her i have used only natural toothpastes for over a decade and she said she does too!!!!! Blew me away.
The main thing I noticed is, my husband and I used to get those tiny little bumps in our mouths, never really gave it much thought. After using natural toothpaste for a few years I got one ( probably something I ate ) and we both went "HEY! We don't get those anymore!!". I've gotten maybe one every year or two, who knows why, but clearly it used to be from the crap toothpaste!!
So in a nutshell.................clearly natural is the way to go!
I use JASON Powersmile cinnamon mint toothpaste, and I think it is delicious. It is fluoride-free.

Ann,
Thanks for mentioning that book about the Flouride Deception, I would love to read that. We have a well, so there is no flouride in our water and I get SUCH conflicting advice. One pediatrician will say I should give my kids flouride drops then another one says no cause it will turn their teeth permanantly gray!! Then my dentist says just have them brush their teeth with flouride toothpaste and what they ingest from that will be enough! It is so confusing!! I would hate for my kids to have a bunch of cavities for something I did or didn't do, but it seems like nobody knows!! Let me know if you know of any other sources of info on this topic!
I switched to natural toothpaste right after going vegan to avoid animal products. The first one I tried was Tom's but I did not like the taste at all. Now I'm using Dr. Ken's Maximum Care toothpaste and mouthwash as well. I like them a lot so far. My teeth feel clean and although it tastes different (and looks different, I was surprised by the light brown color of both, which made me realize how much dye they must put in conventional brands) it does not taste bad.
I use the Kiss My Face Triple Action too. It is awesome. I switched to another natural tooth paste because WH didn't have this and my gums started hurting. i think not only does it give you fresh breath and whiten your teeth but that it keeps your gums healthy too. AND it's fluoride free.
minniehenka - the book is a great read - by christopher bryson - fluoride was a by-product of the making of the atom bomb(!!!) and they realized they needed to put it somewhere......suddenly the dentists say "add it to the water for our teeth!".....what a coincidence! Prior, in the mid-30s european scientists had linked fluoride to illness including breathing problems, central nervous system disorders and esp. a lot of arthritis like musculosketetal problems - this was when it was being studied as an environmental hazard.....then suddenly, when it was needed to create stuff in the US, all of these studies magically disappeared! Eleven EPA unions are calling for a moritorium on water fluoridation because of its likely role in causing osteosarcoma in young boys, the CDC says one in three american kids have dental fluorosis (the sign of being overexposed to fluoride in early childhood) etc....I mean when you read the warning on a toothpast label that says do not swallow....and don't get me started on these pediatric dentists - what a scam! lets coat the three year olds teeth with fluoride....ummmm.....those baby teeth will fall out dude! It makes me crazy! see if you can find the book is like a great espionage story and would (really!) make great beach reading this summer!
Wow! This is making me glad I have a well!! It was really eye opening to me though to see just how little the medical community seems so know about flouride, I seriously get a different answer from each one I ask. So then I've just done nothing (which sounds like might be the right approach). Then they all kind of look at you like you are crazy because you are asking SO many questions, so then like you say, one of them gives you that flouride to brush all over their teeth, but then are like DO NOT let them swallow it!! I'm like, well then why they hell am i putting it in their mouth!!! Argh!! I'm so glad I saw your post because it makes me feel like I am not crazy for being so concerned about this. Thanks so much!!!!
So, I can see that some people think fluoride is a sham. I did too; until I had 14 cavities! I literally had never had a cavitiy in my life! EVER!!!! I go to the dentist every 6 months, have good oral health as well. About a year or year a half before all of these cavities I started using a more natural toothpaste sans flouride, I thought oh its in the water, I'll get enough. Not me! I also started to develop almost more porous teeth. I know pay for flouride treatments from the dentist b/c insurance doesn't cover then after age 16. I trust my dentist, and her theory is that a combination of not using flouride toothpaste and no longer getting flouride treatments is what caused my upspike in cavaties (nearly $1000 later, w/ help from insurance), I know use flouride toothpaste and mouthwash. Just the typical stuff in the store, nothing special.
Here is my thought: everyone is different. If your mouth and teeth need some flouride, you will find out. Unfortunatly the only way to find is to stop using flouride and see what happens. (My mom has been using the same products that I was using, sans flouride and stuff, and she has not had any problems.) I ended up w/ a mouthful of cavities, and a hole in my pocket.
I am always an advocate of listen to your body. TKD is about listening to your body too. You will know what is right for you in due time.
