Breaking Out!

First of all, for great recipe ideas, i follow www.littlehouseofveggies.blogspot.com and www.theveggie-fullkitchen.blogspot.com the recipes are not always simple, but so worth it. I have never been much of a cook, but being a vegan, you kind of have to. I am really really enjoying it and get super excited to try new recipes.

I have been vegan for over six months now and am still dealing with acne. It's so depressing. I don't eat a lot of soy (and I've been vegetarian for 18 years and always had soy in my diet) nor a lot of processed foods. It comes and goes. I actually made it through my last pms w/out new breakouts, but now have 4 large ones. I am on paula's choice acne line which helps and my latest theory is that when I "mess up" and somehow include dairy, I break out, even if it's just a little. My only example is birthday cake from last weekend and the frosting off a grocery store donut. It's hard to imagine that so little can cause it, but it's the only answer I have.

I think I have heard of detox lasting a year?? I'm ok with that, just please don't last the rest of my life :( Next step is a dermatologist. I'm 40 and way too old for this.

Mine is still breaking out and it's been 2 1/2 months! I don't think soy is the culprit as it is for some people, because I ate soy as a lacto-ovo vegetarian also, and did not have this issue at all. Both as a vegetarian AND vegan, I kept soy to a minimum! If it didn't affect my skin as a vegetarian, it can't be the reason it's affecting me as a vegan. Is it possible for a detox to last almost 3 months like this? Before this I had no problems with my skin at all.

Hello All . . I actually posted on another discussion about my breakouts which started 5-6 months after going 100% cold turkey VEGAN. I had a few very hard, large spots like you all described. But then on June 29th, I had a massive breakout. After 6-7 weeks of itching, burning pimple-like rash all over my face I went to an allergist. Now that I am vegan and all the other crap is out of my system, allergies are popping up that I did not know I had - all nuts esp. almonds and hazelnuts, regular potatoes and cantaloupe, and a few others. Weird, right? Doc says that I was probably always allergic to them, but the other "junk" in my body before being vegan may have buffered those allergic reactions to those foods. Doc also says it may be more about the quantity of how much almonds (for example) I am eating now, and that its just too much for my system. I just started the elimination diet 2 days ago which totally sucks, but my skin is clear now. So my point is, try eliminating one thing at a time such as soy, or nuts for a period of a week or so. See what happens. ALSO - A friend and local natural foods store owner told me that the detox thing can really happen to vegans. She recommends drinking dandelion root tea and taking burdock root as well as milk thistle - all herbs to cleanse your system. Hope this helps!
