Can cheese or butter cause diarrhea?

Last night I had some pasta with marinara and garlic bread (yes, with butter...shame on me) thinking it wasn't going to harm me, but MAN! I was up until the wee hours of the morning so sick to my stomach...does that mean my body isn't use to dairy or animal products anymore? Until now my stomach still feels a little funny...I usually eat really well as a vegetarian (I try my best to stay way from dairy and eggs) including lots of fresh veggies, beans, grains, soy protein, last night was the first time in a month that I had regular butter...has this ever happen to anyone? Or did I just have a slight case of food poisoning?
Yes Jennifer - your body is majorly reacting to the dairy. Alicia talks about this all the time - dairy frequently leads to digestive problems, diarrhea, and gas, so what you experienced are classic bodily responses to the dairy you ate.
You may already know this, but you can totally find awesome alternatives to butter to put on garlic bread, like Earth Balance, or even just olive oil. It's totally yummy dairy-free!
Dairy is just the most awful thing for you, on so many levels, so I think it's a good thing that your body is showing you it doesn't want the stuff.
Good luck with feeling better, and definitely stay off the dairy if you want to keep from having digestive issues again.

This is how my body reacts to dairy all the time. As the years went by, it got really bad. At first it was only my stomach, but now my eye lids will swell too. It is now a full blown allergy!
