i'm newly pregnant and a little concerned about the need for b12. i take a supplement every other day or so. it's 1000mcg. i don't think my diet consists of much, so i'm wondering if this is enough. should i be taking it daily?

I know women only need about 2-3 mcg a day of B12. Pregnant women probably need more but you seem to be getting enough. I'm not completely sure though.

It was! You're welcome, it's from the Vegan Cook's Bible, I love it!

I'm looking in my copy of Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook and it says the following amts of B-12 are appropriate:

Not pregnant: 2.4 mg
Pregnant: 2.6 mg
Lactating: 2.8 mg

When I was pregnant with my son (who is now 7) I was vegetarian. I took my prenatal vitamin just like the Dr. said and ate as well as I could. My preganancy went extremely well! Once he was born I breastfed him until he was 1 year. He was always so healthy and always in the higher percentile.
Later, however, when he was 2 he was having quite a ton of issues with Sensory seeking. He was then diagnosed with a Sensory Processing Disorder. Everything became and issue , too much light, too much noise, he bit people all the time, it hurt to have his nails cut...etc. Basically his senses were both HYPER and HYPO sensative. Later, By the time he was 4 and trying to find out what to do I finally took him to a Dietician who told us he was most likey born with a B12 difficency. This was most likely caused by me not getting enough through preganacy and breastfeeding. Once he started taking a B12 suppliment...HUGE change.
All of his sensory seeking and over sensitive senses balanced out.

wow....what a story! i'm glad you've been able to sort it out now:) my prenatal vitamins have 5mcg of b12 in each pill, and i take 3 a day. i wonder if that's overdoing it? it shouldn't be if that's what is in it, but sunshine girl said 2.6 mcg for pregnant women......this is all so complicated sometimes. all you want to do is what's best for you and your baby.....

Is it 2.6 micrograms or milligrams...my B12 vitamin says 1000 milligrams...so is that way too much?

sunshinegirl, is that daily? I'm not pregnant, but newly vegan and have been curious as to whether I should be taking B12 daily or only a couple times a week.

I meant to write that my B12 said 1000 micrograms...and then it says it is 16,667 % daily value! I don't get it.

I'm newly vegan and considering a third little one. I just had my physical and asked for some names of nutritionists in my health care plan. I'll see what they say and report back!
