Frustrated Vegan

Well, I have been a healthy eater for years and have incorporated macrobiotic recipes and principles for years as well. I just made the leap to vegan about 2 months ago and I am still having just as many issues with my health as I always have. And I don't eat junk vegan food; I'm a foodie and I adore cooking so veganism has brought a new level of creativity to my kitchen. I cook from scratch, homemade healthful vegan meals and I am still dealing with:
--no weight loss; even though I have been working out with a personal trainer for 6 wks.--bad skin that is only controlled by bc pills--post nasal drip; which I thought would thoroughly clear up after removing dairy from my diet--can't sleep at night; I wake up every night around 3am and can't get back to sleep for 2 hrs
My 1st 2 wks were terrific--brighter skin, sleeping well. But now those 2 things are gone and the rest is still here. Any macrobiotic help for any of this is appreciated.

You are in the depths of detox. Stick with it and it will be over in 1 to 3 weeks. It's different for everyone. But it is so worth it.

if the detox theory doesn't pan out, consider food sensitivities to things like soy or wheat and try and eliminate ALL wheat for a week and see what happens, then soy etc..... speaking from experience, just because its a good healthy whole food doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you if your body is reacting to it -

Elizabeth,
How old are you? You sound like your hormones are low. Have you ever looked into your hormone levels? Sounds like you need some estrogen/progesterone/testosterone perhaps. You never know until you check your levels. Naturopaths, integrative docs, some gynos, are doing this.

Thanks so much for all the comments! I forgot to mention my hair loss (been happening over the last 10 yrs) and eczema.

Susan--I believe my hormones are definitely a part of all of it. I'm 36 and I know women go thru a hormonal change around 35. I went to my OBGYN and talked to her about all of this about a year ago and she put me on YAZ. I'm not happy about it but it has lessened my skin issues and mellowed my crazy times of the month a little. The downside is I have absolutely no sex drive (too much estrogen from the pills I think) and obviously my husband has an issue with this. :) I would love to get off of it but I'm concerned I will, again, have the face of a 16 yr old which I didn't even have at 16.

All of the issues I have listed are the same issues I've been dealing with for over 10 yrs. I thought veganism would help significantly but that hasn't happened for me.

I have cosidered the EstroSense and even progesterone creams but I so badly wanted to handle this thru diet and exercise. I am definitely going to stick with the diet. I love it and it works for me in every other way. I'm just disappointed in the minor ailments I've always been dealing with.

I agree with ann...Are you willing to try no wheat, no soy...just for a few weeks to see how your body responds? A lot of times... your skin will clear up.... Just a thought.

I would check into thyroid issues. loss of hair is sign of low thyroid, I agree that a lot of what you are describing is hormone related. the inability on the weight thing too. my friend had a simiiar problem and went to endrocrine and found her thryroid issue.

I am totally serious Really ALOT of people have acne problems during detox. There are SOOO many threads about it. Then about week 8 it just magically clears up. Alicia talks about this in the book too. If it doesn't then there is probably another reason but it is so common that it REALLY probably is just detox.

No wheat no soy could be hard but it's worth a try. i have had my thyroid checked and it doesn't seem to be having any issues although I've heard that the testing is so unbalanced I could still be having an issue and the test may not pick up on it. I have had acne issues for 10 yrs--I don't think it's the detox. The only thing that's been able to control it in 10yrs has been the pill and I hate the pill.

Have you ever tried juicing? It really seems to make a difference with my skin.
