I made Toll House cookies for my parents and ate a few. Wow. I think the sugar in the cookies caused me to want to sleep right away. Is this normal after foregoing sugar for awhile??

Sugar definitely takes a toll on your system. When you abstain from it for a while you can definitely feel the effects right away.

Try using other sweeteners like pure maple syrup, agava nectar, brown rice syrup and try to use less sugar (preferably organic vegan cane sugar). Although try not to consume to much with these things in them either because you can still feel their effects.

I do use some organic vegan can sugar and of course when I'm out and about eating many foods have some sugar in them but I try to watch my intake as best I can. I do love sugar, just not how it makes me feel.

Good luck on your sugar free journey! :-)

You can also reduce the amount of sugar - refined or otherwise - in your recipes by a third or up to a half with some simple swap outs.

Of course swap for vegan subs in places where the items are non vegan ;) but you get the idea.

I have just figured out that sugar is EVIL. I always knew it in my head, but I just experienced it. I have not had any (other then fruit) for quite a while now and last night I had an orange soda (sodas were the only beverage choice where I was at). I could hardly sleep at all! I was bouncing off the walls and finally fell asleep, but then I kept waking up about every hour after that. No more soda for me-ever!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm beginning to see the ill effects of sugar too. I'm a former sugar-holic (trying to reform). I hadn't eaten a real sugary dessert for a few weeks (since starting my newly vegan lifestyle almost 2 months ago). And I rarely eat them now. Every once in a while something will have too strong a pull to resist, so I'll give in. But more and more I'm noticing that when I do choose to eat the high-sugar thing, I get a full feeling very quickly (while before I could just eat and eat and eat sugar). I've also gotten a slight headache a time or 2 as well. And I just all-over don't feel as good as I felt prior to eating it! It's pretty strong evidence, and has led me to give up more and more sugar. And my desire for it is less and less. Pretty cool!
