I was very excited to have started the superhero plan after being vegan since July of last year. I am a runner, I actually just ran my first half marathon a few weeks ago in Lisbon. After being in europe with a non-vegan friend I decided that I needed to clean out the system and just be healthy because I was feeling extra down during the trip. With the language barriers I am pretty sure dairy and eggs made their way into my system which did not agree with me. Besides the point... I started the superhero diet and although i feel better already I am having a really hard time running. I can't run more than 3 miles without my heart rate rising too high and my lungs feeling like i have a cold. obviously for me this is a problem, but also unreasonable... seeing as though i was running over 4x that a few weeks ago. I am not sure if my body is just adjusting to the new diet plan or if I need to maybe look into further nourishment.
i am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what the possible choices are from this point. I don't want to give up the new plan but I also have races coming up that I am hoping to run in.
any and all help is appreciated :) thank you!
The book "Thrive" by Brendan Brazier has been recommended by many for the athletes on the blog. It talks about vegan sports nutrition. Hope that helps!
Jessica,
It's funny reading your post about the "respiratory" like symptoms you are experiencing while running. I am a triathlete and been vegan for almost a month now....I have also experienced a few situation during running and cycling which you just described above. Initially, I thought it was because of the pollen in the air, or because I was tired or getting sick, or maybe even from car exhaust. Now I am also wondering if it is because of the realize lifestyle change. Has anyone else experienced this?
Hey Rachael,
I hope you figured out the respiratory problem! I actually did follow the advice of Suzy and got Thrive which was very helpful but also very demanding in terms of time spent in the kitchen! I am wondering if you ever got over your respiratory problem? I have been a lot better but I am just starting the superhero plan again so hopefully it is easier this time!
Wow- I have been having the same problems! I am an overweight runner but never really had horrible breathing problems till just a couple of weeks ago and there has been a knot in my back that is preventing me from running faster. I think part of it is needing to realize what I'm allergic to. How about a cleanse- the ones that start with you just eating one thing at a time and slowly re-introducing foods into your diet. If they don't agree with you, then you will know what it is right away. I think this is my problem. Since becoming vegetarian, I eat more wheat and I had always been allergic as a child. Maybe it's coming back?
