I've been a vegetarian for 2 1/2 years and went vegan January 1st this year! When I went vegetarian I lost about 15 pounds gradually over the first 6 months, lost my headaches and need for caffeine! After reading The Kind Diet I decided to go vegan! The last 5 lbs I wanted to lose just melted off without any extra effort. I am 5'8" and a healthy 140 lbs. now.
Over the last 2 1/2 years I constantly get asked "How do you get your protein and calcium". It makes me crazy when people ask this because they are not educated on being vegetarian or vegan and are just repeating what they have heard from other people who have never studied this way of life. My mom worried that I would lack calcium when I dropped dairy 4 months ago. I went to my doctor this week to have a physical and received the results from my blood work today. I was SO excited to call my mom and let her know that my results were:
Protein - 7.1 (Normal is 6.2 - 8.3)
Calcium - 10.3 (Normal is 8.6 - 10.2)
Even better than those beautiful numbers were the results of my cholesterol. My HDL cholesterol (Good cholesterol) was 126. Anything over 46 is good and my doctor said they do not have any patients with an HDL that high! She said that was a direct connection to the fact I do not eat animal products!
All other numbers were great too! It's so great to have validation and proof to the skeptics that this is the healthiest way to live!
Thank you Alicia for your book that made me decide to go from vegetarian to vegan and for this website that helps keep me passionate about this way of life!
that's awesome to hear! :D congrats!
Give that to those idiots that think we're going to shrivel up and die!!!!
