why am I getting yeast infections?!

So I've been vegetarian for over a year and a full-on vegan for 4 months...whole grains, unprocessed foods and all that jazz. So...for the past 2 months I have been getting yeast infections the week before I get my period. I only ever get a yeast infection, typically, when I take antibiotics. And this means I may get a yeast infection once every 2 or 3 years. So what the heck is giving me these infections all of a sudden!? So frustrated!
I sure hope someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks

Cheryl

I don't know! and now that I've said that.....hmmm......you figure changing your diet will also change your alkaline/acid makeup, and an imbalance of that vaginally could lead to yeast infections so maybe now your body is outta balance for whatever reason. My guess would be its got nothign to do with what you are eating and may be another factor - especially if you are not eating a lot of sugar. Are you treating the infections with prescription/over the counter stuff? if so, you could be leaving yourself open for subsequent infections so it could be a case of you got one and the following infections were due to something pushed out of whack by the RX. Also, if you are always getting them a week before your period, its obviously hormonally related - right? That part of your cycle is dominated by progesterone so maybe taking something that will balance your progesterone - I love Vitex (aka: Chaste tree) - no side effects, you can get a tincture and take as directed for a couple of cycles and see if that helps. If you have an infection, try a lovely piece of garlic in gauze up there (leave a tail to pull it back out!!!) or a product like earth's botanical harvest hydrastis vaginal suppositories (goldenseal) - those things work magic! I have had patients with chronic yeast issues who have gotten great results. But you didn't ask for how to tx....sorry! but maybe if you treat it different than you have been, it won't come back?

I have had the same problem ever since I became vegan and I have't been eating anymore sugar than normal. I get them every few months a few days after my period ends. I had NEVER gotten one before this. I currently take 1 clove of garlic everyday and this helps a bit, but I still get them and have to take Diflucan. It is sooo annoying!

hmmm...well I haven't been treating them with over the counter stuff because I really wanted to rid myself of all things "unnatural." I have been taking a natural product that I have found in the pharmacy called AZO. They have a product for yeast and for UTIs. Now, I'm not all that sure how natural it really is but taken 3xs a day seems to get it out of my system in a week. I was thinking that all of the photoestrogens in soy products may be messing with my hormone levels around my period. And yes! Catconsrv, it is soooooo annoying! For sure! Ann, thanks for that info. I will definitely try what you have suggested!

Hmmm, I barely eat any soy so that is not my problem at least. Everytime I tell my GYN he says it is because I eat so many carbs, but when I tell him that they are all whole grain he looks as confused as I feel! I really wish I could get rid of them, but I haven't heard any miracle suggestions yet. Even probiotics with the garlic hasn't kept it at bay.

You know, I thought my first infection last month was from stress. Someone told me that this is possible. And trust me, I have been stressed! But, it is just too strange that this is now a monthly occurence. I have to say that sticking a clove of garlic up my lady bits will be my LAST resort!! Let's pray someone can help us! :-)

Now that you have begun getting these regularly, you will be prone to them in the future. It is natural for us to have a certain level of yeast, and an infection is simply an overgrowth of it. Sugar is most likely the catalyst, so read your labels. Also, you can make it go away for good with a great probiotic. I take Primal Defense from our local Natural Foods warehouse, and I haven't had another yeast infection since (2+ years). I never took any medication to get rid of mine, I just upped the good bacteria with the probiotic. Good luck!

Get yourself to a quality Herbalist stat! I used to work for one. What I learned is that even on a vegan diet there are foods that encourage yeast build up (flour I think is one). A good Candida (that is what is causing your yeast issue) diet will really help as would a proper Candida cleanse. Don't do a cleanse that doesn't let you eat food! Its a sham. A good cleanse has you restrict a few things like sugar and flour and focus your eating on fruits veggies and whole grains (kind of like tkd). I have used and reccomend the candida cleanse here: http://www.wrc.net/store/productslist.aspx?CategoryID=2&selection=2 It is in Canadian dollars if that helps. Dr. Willard reccomends you do a d-tox first which is the procedure I follow. I hear some people have great results from just changing the diet which is located here: http://www.wrc.net/wrcnet_content/dietplans/candida_diet.htm There are some sneaky foods like peanuts that can also contribute to the problem.

I get candida in my sinuses which sucks as all I can smell is mould! Its gross! This cleanse has helped me and in general I try to follow the diet and work in the vegan stuff as well. Alicia also mentions in the book that she doesn't eat a lot of bread with yeast as she too has Candida issues.

Good luck chickadee!

Thanks everyone! I will definitely check out the Candida diet and the "Natural Defense" probiotic. I guess I just am confused because I have all but eliminated white sugar and flour from my diet since starting the Kind Diet. I do, however eat peanut butter for breakfast at least 4 out of 7 days a week. Of course, I always have! I love peanut butter! Wish me luck and thanks again!

I truly feel your pain. I struggled with chronic yeast infections/UTI for several years while in my mid-twenties. It was so frustrating having a doctor tell me that I should change my diet (don't eat acidic food, no sugar, etc.), change my boyfriend (now husband), take this pill, or that your urine test if FINE, nothing is wrong with you! But, everything I took made the symptoms worse, or would take it away, only to tease me and come back worse! I am not a vegan, but I do eat very natural, organic, and healthy. I do eat sugar, but I do not drink sodas. I also do not take any prescriptions, only Align daily which is a fantastic probiotic.

So...I finally found an OBGYN who prescribed BORIC ACID 600mg suppositories..."Okay, I'll try it!?!?" My doc told me It is "old school" thinking and all natural from a doc's perspective and many don't like to use it, lots actually! I had to go to a COMPOUNDING PHARMACY to get it made, cost $50 for 30 pills which last me @4 months. I use it before my period which is when my PH is all out of whack and often during my period just to be sure, using at most 7 consistent suppositories per month...AND I haven't had a yeast infection or female issues in over two years!!!

I keep everything consistent, and I love how I eat, exercise, live, etc. I do not eat processed food, I do eat sugar, yeast, etc., but like I said I do eat organic, natural, and consistently. Changing too much in your diet can throw everything off. Personally, being a devote veg/vegan, meat eater, etc. requires consistency and a regular way of eating, not always changing, taking away, etc.
Many doctor's wouldn't write the script b/c of personal issues with a natural drug and compounding pharmacy, but you have to call and ask before you make your appt.

Please try this, I swear by it.
