Shoyu ?

What exactly is it? A spice? A paste? Wasn't able to get it at the regular grocery store because they didn't know what it is and prob don't have it anyway, but wanting to make the thin mushroom pizzas tonight. Can I substitute something in place of Shoyu?Thank you for your help!
