I really want to start growing my own fruits and vegetables, however I do not have a back yard or a front yard really ( hard to come by in Brooklyn) We have a terrace on the second floor with outdoor carpeting.....I had seen the Topsey Turvey in Home Depot and I thought that this was just for tomatoes, but as is turns out it can be used for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini-a variety of things. I was thinking that this might be ideal as I could get stands with a hook and just hang them ( you are supposed to hang them upside down) they are about 10 bucks a pop (not too bad) but then the stands, seeds, soil, might get pricey...I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice, do these work, is it worth it? ....I like the idea that you hang them, this eliminates the chance for bugs and worms and suh to ruin them.....I have room to line up a few with different seeds and we get plenty of sun too.......I thank you in advance for your advice!!

michelle - I don't know about the topsy turvey but another thought may be if you could try and search out and see if you can get a community garden plot somewhere near you - I have been (half-assed) trying to find space to do a chinese herb garden in nyc for the college I teach at and came across a lot of interesting sites - try looking around:
